He is a beginner. He needs a beginner, 'outdated' book to study and when he'll know the basic well he can go for online material to improve skills!

I know me sheet from books. I don't learn online, online I only do light reading.

If you're going to cover the fundamentals (and avoid the "tricks" "shenanigans" and "hoop jumping" in the process) head over to SitePoint and read John Conde's Search Engine Optimization FAQ.

Of course, the first link in my signature doesn't hurt either. ;)

Avoid seo softwares, too many links in too less time can get you in trouble.
Rather get as many legitimate back links as you can, and pray that your search engine ranking is improved in google.

Here are some quick pointers. You need to do keyword research. You can use a tool like Wordtracker. Target low competition keywords that have traffic.

Design your website around these keywords. Include them in the title tag and twice in the body with related words as Google uses latent semantic indexing.

However, about 90% of search engine rankings is dependent on the amount of quality links you have to your website. You can get these by submitting your site to quality directories. Also write articles and submit to the major article directories. These will be one way links and are also viral. You get more links as people publish your articles. Just remember to include your keywords in your anchor text.

In a nutshell that covers most of the things you need to know. Based on those factors I am able to get very good rankings.

use seo elite to spy on your competitors, blog/site which is ranked high

research their link, anchor and try to beat them, or at least rally with them

optimize your blog/sites for visitors also, i think google will change their algorithm based on visitors loyalty ... loyalty will add extra bonus on ur site/blogs

link to relevant sites/blogs, post comments on blogs which doesn't have no-follow code

write short and usefull article and submit to article directories, which one ? see if ur competitors has already getting link value ( use seo elite ) from the submission

    ;) happy SEO - ing
