This may seem like an inconsequential question, but do you prefer categories like:

    Category 1 Category 2 Category 3
    Category 4 Category 5 Category 6

    Or:

    Category 1 Category 3 Category 5
    Category 2 Category 4 Category 6

    You should rather write:

    Category A Category B Category C
    Category D Category E Category F

    Or:

    Category A Category C Category E
    Category B Category D Category F

As it is sorted by name - not by number.
My preference is first example, though I use both on my directories.

i always go for B. But normally thats with 2 columns of cats. If you have 3 its a different matter.

So tell us how many columns you plan on having first:)

I am not really sure if I want to do 2 or 3 columns, I will look at some different resolutions and see how much I can pack onto a screen

On ievu I have 2 columns and the 2nd version for the categories. I think 3 column directories should use the first type..

I find the second easier to locate categories.
I guess the vertical movement of the eye is faster.

    It depends:
while walking on the street I prefer horizontal (more girls I can see)
then in bed my eye is faster vertical :D

so yes, horizontal enlarges the span which makes it slower to locate things and drag that thing to your bed. and in case you succeeded, vertical makes you fast in bed :D
