Not sure if this is the correct forum, but if it's not, please have it moved. I need more RAM for my computer, but I don't know what I should know or what to look up about what type of card to get. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Look up your "system information" from control panel. It will tell you what kind of RAM you need. Or better yet go to a site like Kingston and plug in your PC model. They have a widget that tells you all you need to know.
Yea I would say look in your system information, find the kind of RAM you have and then hit up Ebay, NewEgg, or TigerDirect for the best prices. Don't bother buying anything less than a 256MB chip though
Looking in the Control Panel, and hitting System, I don't get much information... Computer: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2200+ 1.80 GHz 256 MB of RAM This isn't for the computer I'm on currently, it's for the one in my room. It runs extremly slow... How does that information there help me? I took the card out and found out that it was a DDR card, but I don't know how much my computer can hold, and if I can get a 2GB card for it... Help plz? Thanks!
Go to the link I put there in thread earlier and plug in your manufacturer and model. It will give you all you need to know.
Yeah, but the thing is, I built the computer from spare parts... It's got parts from an emachine, windows 95, millenium, and 98... And the motherboard doesn't have anything to tell me what kind it is...
How many banks of DDR do you have? Also you have to know what speed your motherboard is operating at i'.e. (Bus Speed)
The easiest way would be to take out the chip you have now, go to your computer store and tell them that's what you use and you would like more. Or note down the info on the stick.
I don't think you want that but there is a site called "Belarc Advisor" that will do what you are looking for.
take out the stick you have and see what it says on the side..it may say..pc2100 ddr..so then you know you need another stick of pc2100 ddr ram..i have 2 sticks of 512 corsair pc3000? or something similiar..have not checked in awhile
As other said, go into your system information center. I wouldn't recommend something like eBay or Craigslist for this. You should go to Best Buy for a new and legate RAM stick, also it's better to get at least a 500mb+ stick.
go to http://www.crucial.com use the scan my system. no-one ever buys less than 1gig of ram anymore, 256 will run a 7 year old pc. 512 will run a 5 year old pc but slow. windows xp takes 200mb of ram to run your pc just doing nothing, that leaves you with 56mb ram to run your stuff lol buy 2x 1gig sticks for that pc. you'll notice the difference right away. AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2200+ 1.80 GHz 256 MB of RAM whoever put 256mb ram in that pc is an asshole, let me guess, pcworld or emachine maybe even dell at a push. an abacus is faster you need 2x 1 gig sticks, that pc can take it, my old amd 1800+ could take 2gig.
samantha, yeah, it was from an old e-machine of mine. Probably from about 99-2000. I just put the comp together from spare parts till I could afford a laptop...
Why do you think it's SDRAM? The chip that's in it now is: DDR333 Or something like that, there are more numbers after that.
1999/2000 it was rare to see DDR chips and as emachines are cheap and slow on the updates, i just thought the chances are its sdram
Oh well, unless there is a misprint on the chip, I guess it's DDR!!! And I just went to crucial, downloaded their scanner program, and saved it to my flashdrive. I'm gonna go see if it helps! And thanks Samantha! You're a life saver! (not the candy, =P)
Download CPU-Z run it and look under MEMORY, it will tell you which brand you have what type what speed etc etc. You dont really need same brand but you do need matching pairs otherwise the faster RAM will only go as fast as the slowest.
