    Hi,
I am new to seo and this may sound to be a stupid question...but how really is a keyword important to a website...while i believe that using the right keyword inside an article is important, i would like to know whether using the correct keyword in the meta tag has any bearing on the ranking???

And what is the safe number of keywords that can be used in the meta tags???i mean i can go on and add over 20-25 keywords related to my website...does this affect my ranking and importance in search engines??

Finally, where can i find a keyword suggestion tool especially for google...i believe overture and wordtracker use keyword database which is not related to google...please help me out..

Keywords are one of the most important things on any site. In you content title and meta tags. I would use 3 to 5 terms and not use same word over 3 times in title and meta tag.

Overture and wordtracker work good. You could try adwords tool to see what terms pay alot. Then you know they are good but will be hard to get ranked on firts page of google.

    Hey there,

Meta Keywords are not important in google search. However, keywords in title and content are important with google.

Meta Keywords are important to yahoo, but not so much as they once were.

If you do use meta keywords, I would limit yourself to 8 on a single page. The more keywords you have, the more your existing keywords get diluted. If you have to use more than 8, I would split your website into multiple pages.

    Sincerely,
    Travis Walters

The keywords hyperlinked to a page means a lot to Google in describing what that page is about.

Keywords and keyword phrases are the most important elements in SEO because search engines select the site/web page that it displays according to what the user is actually searching. Keyword research/discovery must be done to know the correct keywords that are related to a site and its target visitors.

Title tags are extremely important, then headers, then normal body text, then everything else.

You may meet people (in other forums) who say keywords do not matter but that is at least not consistent with my experience.

So important that search engines stopped reading the meta keywords in the 1990s.
