Personally I think it would be worth setting one up yourself so you get some experience. You'll learn a lot more about the best ways to monetize them, while getting some appreciation for the code etc. It's not hard if you use a free template, you just replace the adsense publisher ID and the name of the site etc...and upload it. You'll obviously need to have a look around for decent hosting, but then you just need to get traffic. There are plenty of free ways to get traffic to a proxy, meaning that your only outlay will be the hosting.
Why not give it a go? You might be pleasantly suprised!

I have a proxy site running at the moment, www.quickappz.net
Made me $122~ so far on adsense. It's alright. Took me a while to try and get traffic, you have to be very dedicated I guess, it's recently been losing a little traffic, about 88 hits a day now, used to be 120~.

There was a guy (karan something) that was offering free info domain, free installation, free submission to 50 topsites, and free 1 month hosting for $5.

I can also host the sites for free in exchange for ads on proxied pages, then the only cost for you is the domain, and you keep all the adsense money, and I take care of everything else like server management etc.

I don't think a proxy would work with youtube. Besides would you want people streaming Videos threw your proxy:confused:

As for logging on sites like myspace facebook etc. You will need to setup up phproxy to use HTTPS.

It is possible to get a proxy working with youtube with a few hacks...however it isn't really worth it. It adds nothing to the revenue, and uses a load of bandwidth! Well that was my experience ;)

It is possible, but like bigjohnny pointed out, very resource wasteful.

The proxy market is huge, but with a few good links in proxy directory's and groups you can get huge.

Most people only make a few bucks a day from adsense, but direct link sales can bring you in some CRAZY cash(100's a month, no problem!)!

but for selling something you need tageted traffic, so you can use geotargeted... but dunno which will convert good for proxy users.

for bandwidth problems the best will be learn about php and Curl, it could take just a few hours, and then modify some script to get it working with curl and you can also add any feature you want.

If you're at work or school and you want to show your buddy a video but youtube.com is blocked, you can view it through the proxy!

Here is the Youtube Modification for PHProxy
    Note: I didn't make it

You can still login to myspace. Youtube would suck bandwidth like mad, I don't know why you would want it to work.

I don't see how that is a probably seeing how most webmasters who are serious about their proxies and/or proxy networks have hosting plans with unlimited bandwidth...

That is the old version and shouldn't be used compared to http://sourceforge.net/projects/poxy/ because the newest one PHProxy 0.5 beta 2 has many fixes and a very different structure than the one they offer for download on phproxy.org's site which isn't the official site of phproxy anyways.

The Google rep I am communicating with advised me not to put Google ads on my proxy at all. I don't know it that is a sign or something.

Ya you wouldn't make enough money off it anyways for it too work.
Even you did throw money at it to get it popular.
The admins of the school/work networks would just ban your URL and screwed.
    Waste of time.

Banning by both ip and domain sounds smarter.

Thats why i use diffrent c-class ips or whatever they are called each 8 sites (8 ips = 8 sites) lol oh well.

If you throw G! ads on the front page then you are pretty safe I believe. But if you throw them on the results page them you can screw yourself. People could look up porn and it comes back on your ass!

So here is my two cents:

I started with proxies April 07. Catching the tail end of the school year, I capped out with my best DAY at $49 from adsense. I spent the summer learning SEO and Link Development, and have benefited greatly from that if nothing else. I had one site over the summer that got up to 10,000 Page Views of my home page alone per day, averaging about $10 per day from adsense. Most of that was traffic from China. I wound up killing the traffic, but I have sense learned how I could monetize that traffic. I wish I had that traffic back and ten times it. Anyway, not to chase rabbits...

Today with the school year back in swing I am making about $25-$35 per day from adsense. I utilize adsense on my home page. I utilize adversal pop unders on my proxified pages. As of the 14th of this month I have made $242 from adversal since the first of the month ( Oct 1- Oct 14th = $242) I get roughly 60% US traffic, 20% UK traffic, 8% AU traffic and a mix for the rest, but my next step is to get international traffic from china and similar countries.

I host my proxy at ServINT (servint.com). I pay $200 monthly and get 2000 GB of bandwidth. They are a bit pricier then others, but they deliver premium hosting (fast for users, customer satisfaction is a must you know..) and EXCELLENT support. I am currently using about 60 - 70 GB of bandwidth per day and getting 10,000 - 15,000 page views of my home pages alone per day. Also of note I use bandwidth handlers developed by pepsipunk here on DP which cut my bandwidth by 50%, I was using twice as much which equates to a lot less profit. On that note - pepsipunk has many quality scripts which I would definitely recommend if you wanted to start a proxy. I have purchased several and am quite pleased not only with his service, but the products as well.

Traffic is slowly picking up as the school year is in full swing now. MTD I have made $354 from adsense and $242 from adversal. Since its half way thru the month if you double that I am on tract to do roughly $1192 in income for the month. My only expense is my server bill which will be $200 (unless you count my inet connection - $45 and my electricity - prob $25 although, I would pay these regardless). I spend $0 on advertising. So roughly I stand to make about $1000 profit from my proxies this month.

As to the amount of work I put in for that, its roughly about 2-3 hours per week right now. I have reached a plateau, and am just keeping the pump pumping at this point. I have invested several hundred hours to get to this point. However, that was largely due to my learning curve. I consider it like going to school, except I didn't have to pay anyone and got to make a small profit in the mean time. I am more of a self taught person then a classroom type so it works for me. Perseverance is the key here though. However if an experienced person just started up a proxy site they could get a lot further a lot faster.

I have learned a lot of hard lessons too, like an $800 server bill for one month, cause I messed up. Overage will kill you on bandwidth, thus get bandwidth handlers and anything else that you can get to cut bandwidth. Also not getting adversal my tax info caused my payments to be held for 2 months. My bad - my spam filter counted their emails as spam. Nothing against adversal, they have always paid me on time, just my lack of focus on my email box. Experience keeps a dear school.

As for what I do. I have over 30 proxy sites. I have a network site which lists all of the proxies, and gives a new one each week. I have a newsletter which emails a new proxy each week - since May it has accrued about 550 members.

My next project is going to be to build a website to teach others how to make proxies, a profit thereby, and what to avoid in so doing.

** May I say of note, I learned most of what I learned right here on DP. Reading is learning, learning combined with doing = profit. Thanks DP.**

Synopsis: So are proxies still the in-thing? Well they are still widely used and growing. They are a huge market, but there are a lot of players. However players come and go, but solid players get the real benefits. You have to stick with it and build. I feel that I am only on plateau 1. Once I get some time away from other projects I am going to invest the time and take my proxies to the next level. In the mean time with work since april behind me I stand to make $1000 profit this month with 12 hours of work. So they are the in-thing for me. :)
