Wasn't the same type of fear used to keep us in Vietnam? We now trade with them, aren't they better off now than when we were killing their innocent people?
I hate that when a general says something "pro-iraq-war", the right wing holds him high as a patriot... But when a general says something "anti-iraq-war", they start with the character defamation...
This is mostly done by people who have never served a day in the military but they think of themselves as some kind of military "expert".
Amen... Even today, Sen. Lindsey Graham was on the news and seemed to blame the entire Iraq fiasco on General Sanchez... Also, if you pay attention, you'll notice he says "every time I went to visit iraq, it seemed to get worse", which conflicts with the right wing reports of constant improvement...
With this issue, or others? Of course there's "partisan hackery" (term stolen from Jon Stuart) on both ends of the spectrum, but I'm talking about the use of military officers to push their own agenda...
I agree 100% that was an ad hominem personal attack against a military officer to further a personal agenda... While I believe their hearts are in the right place, that was definitely an immature and irresponsible way of showing displeasure with the current status of the Iraq war... But... the moveon.org was done by a private group, and was condemned by a lot of the dem's, whereas the current sanchez backlash is coming from capitol hill... Also, months before the "General Betray Us" ad appeared, Rush Limbaugh called Sen. Chuck Hagel "Senator Betrayus" for siding with the left... But again, these are just private groups and people; my problem is when elected officials are doing the mudslinging and character defamation...
You mean like our elected officials are trying (and failing hilariously) to do to Rush Limbaugh right now?
I haven't heard of any elected officials' response to Rush's "Senator Betray Us" ad... Please post some links...
Nah, they are going after Limbaugh over another lame excuse. In a positive turnaround, the callow efforts of these "elected representatives" is actually going to benefit the children of Marines and Law Enforcement Officers who are killed in the line of duty. The right-wingers are gleeful over the upset for the Democrats.
I don't agree with a lot of what he says, but I like the fact he's turning a negative (when he called some troops "phony") into a positive (donating the money)...
I'm not sure that Limbaugh's program is designed for people to agree with him. I can't listen to it because he's so annoying. But one thing you can say about Rush is that he has almost supported our nations troops. The Democrats did an incredibly stupid thing when they tried to make it appear that he did not. The troops aren't morons -- they know who their friends are and they know who has been painting them as torturers, rapists, uneducated, and war-mongering baby-killers. This is another huge PR win for Rush and yet another reason for the Congress's 24.6% approval rate. As stupid as some people may think Rush is, he has once again shown that he is smarter than the Democratic leadership.
I don't know, I can only speak for myself, but I took offense when he called some troops "phony" for wanting to bring our soldiers home alive... Especially coming from a guy that's never served in the military... Where'd you get 24% from? Last I heard it was a lot lower then that! I do give him credit, it was a good way to turn a bad into a good...
Limbaugh is like MoveOn, a non-military group or person. If it's ok to condemn the MoveOn ad, why is it not ok to condemn Rush? Limbaugh first went after soldiers, then he went after the votevets soldier who stood up to him, and before all of that, he went after a decorated vietnam vet, chuck hagel and called him Senator Betray Us. The reality is that Limbaugh has no moral center and will say anything to get a reaction. His entire show is neo con shock jock, the grand father of Sean Hannity. At least MoveOn, as misguided they may be, have a specific purpose and goal in mind.
I don't, because he was saying what every service member I know would say -- except that he used less profanity. No one wants a potential deserter in their fire team, that's why military people oppose the draft. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/ It's a combination metric based upon FOX News, NPR, Gallup, AP-Ipsos, and ABC News/Wash Post polls.
You must know different troops than I know, most troops I have talked to, many of which have been in Iraq would disagree. Most actually are not in support of the war. Talk to them normally and they might say one thing, let them get a few drinks and loosen up and it's funny how things can change To be honest the real pro war people so far have been fat lazy right wing slobs, most including current and x military are against the war, or at least how it's been faught and based on. Go figure.
I must. But, I do hang out with a pretty hard-working and hard-playing crowd. Of course, the poll numbers I've seen also support my experience. There just aren't a lot of liberals in the Armed Forces. That's why the Democrats worked so hard to try to get military votes invalidated in 2000.
Wow, that's not true... From what I've seen, the reason people think that, is because you can't come out against a war, or the president, while you're serving...
I hang out with guys who train hard core. Guy I workout with is an Xmarine, much of his family is currently in the military, his brother in law is in Iraq at this moment Polls do not always have accurate conclusions, especially when it comes to military. What does 'liberal' have to do with supporting the war, or why we are there? Exactly! A guy I talked to a few months ago had just come back from Iraq. I met him at a bar/club. We talked a bit about the situation. He was proud as hell of his service, of which he should be. During our discussion he explained this to me as well, many who are there, proud to be there do not support the cause. When you're serving it's not easy to speak against it. I can't even pretend to guess what it's like so I will not, I also hope those not in the military would try. I will go by the word of MANY military I have talked to who feel they were lied to, things are not as good as people like to try to claim, etc, etc, etc.
