Blogging, how far have you come?

Today I was thinking about blogging and how far I've come since starting a few years ago.

I wanted to ask if you felt the same way? Have you achieved your goals? Was it everything you expected? Are you making money? Any disappointedly along the way?

I just want to hear what bloggers that have been blogging for some time have to say about their experiences. Please be honest, this isn't a contest.

I've been blogging for about 4 years now. I know that it sounds cliche but the best way to encourage someone to come to your site is to have something interesting to say. Leave comments (not comment spam). Post in message boards.

If you have something interesting to say, people will follow your signature through to to your site. Once you get them there keep hitting them with interesting points of view. Get your visitors to participate in the conversation.

I've only been doing it for two yeas and have had some success. Obviously when I started I though that it would generate thousands of dollars every month but still, what I've achieved isn't that bad. To be able to say that I have a blog that receives an average of 1300 visitors per days isn't that bad. It has been a lot of work.

i've been blogging for almost a year now..

When i compare my early posts to new posts the difference is night & day.. the look of my blog has matured 1000%, i've recently graduated from Blogger.com to my own WP blog, readership is way up, and i'm dabbling in advertising the blog to increase readership even more. - i dont have any advertising in the blog, so money-making via blogging is not a valid measurement for me..

All that being said, i'm still a beginner and i have a lot to learn.

I am just new to niche blogging and I've set my goals quite high but I think it will be achievable since I am just 17. I am quite satisfied with the current results and the only thing I lacked is time due to my studies.

I had my own Blogger.com blog but it was more used as a place to send potential customers for samples of my work rather than something that was read. I just started a proper Arsenal site with a friend though and it's already a lot, lot more popular :)

It's really interesting to read everyone's experience with blogging. I too aimed very high when I started my blog and unfortunately many of my goals were never reached. Like most of you my posts have matured and so has the way I see the internet. Personally I still think it possible to make money blogging but earning big amounts is quite hard.

I wish I had the energy and time to post on my WP sites... but I just can't find the motivation. Most of my monetized WP sites aren't really date specific, and don't require regular posting - so I obviously don't bother updating them often. I guess I'm making money doing nothing, but I still feel like a loser for neglecting my blogs.

If I'm in a blogging mood I'll usually just post on my personal blog - which gets no traffic and makes no money

I know exactely how you feel. After sometime I gave up and didn't bother to post on my blog but that changed after I started thinking of new ways to make money. I implemented them on my personal blog and got motivated by seeing all the money coming in.

I love to research so I think I am coming along fine. I just recently started making money only about $200 so far but that is more than what I started with. I am catching on with some things. I still don't know html but I really don't care about that part anymore.

If you guys don't mind, care to share the things you have tried and applied to make money? I'm using adsense, cj and bidvertiser on one of my blogs and bidvertiser and clickbank on another. adsense on the first blog mentioned and clickbank on the second blog mentioned are making money. I'm also promoting on the mybloglog, myspace, facebook. What do you guys use? Does anyone use adwords to get more keywords for your blog or do you rely on natural indexing?

I got a question also. If your SERPs have your blog at #1, does your PR go up. I have been #1 for searches based on the title keyword for some of my blogs but PR 0. Is that common?

I guess that depends on your definition of serious money.

Ok guys, we're drifting a bit from the original topic. The important thing isn't if you're making money but rather if you're enjoying and have learned anything from blogging.

You're right. I learned that your title in your post makes a difference on how your page is ranked in google. I am starting to get some first page responses when people google things. That makes me happy.
