Long vs Short URLs

    Hey there,

I know it has been said that short URLs are better than long URLs.

It also has been said that using keywords in URLs are great.

However, how many characters are considered a long URL?

Would "how-packages-work-for-buyers.cfm" be considered too long?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Sincerely,
    Travis Walters

You'll be fine with that, but I wouldn't go much longer.

Seems a bit long IMO, I wouldnt go past 2 hyphens, and I doubt I would buy a domain with more than 1 anyway. Think of something a little shorter and sweeter. It doesnt all depend on what your domain name is, as some big sites rank incredibly well for keywords that are not in their domain name whatsoever.

.cfm is not a TLD, it is a file extension.

    He means www.domain.com/how-packages-work-for-buyers.cfm

    Hey there,

It looks like there is a mixed vote so far. I am still looking for a few others to give advice on this.

I was thinking about changing the URLs to the how-to section to coder-packages.cfm, buyer-packages.cfm, coder-projects.cfm, and coder-packages.cfm.

These names are a little less descriptive, but the keywords would still be there. What do you guys think of this instead of using the longer URLs like how-packages-work-for-buyers.cfm?

    Sincerely,
    Travis Walters

URLs dont play a large role in SEO, you should focus on simplicity while still keeping the keywords. coder-packages.cfm is fine.

Make sure you optimize the titles well rather than the URLs.

Long urls in moderation is fine
    like:
    proxy-talk.com/-free-ad-mod-for-phproxy-t-5.html

but other ones where you have:
    generic-niche-website-for-adsense-turnkey-etc-lol.com/niche-keyword-goes-here-plus-more-niche-keywords-haha.html

is what we look down on ;p

I wouldn't go that long even, or have that many hyphen just cause its a burden to type and remember.

    Hey there,

    Thanks again for the comments.

I do not thinking typing these particular URLs is a huge issue. I doubt anybody will be typing the how it works pages into the browser directly. They will more likely browse from the home page, which they are easy to find from there.

Based on all of this information, I am going to go with the shorter but effective URL strings like coder-packages.cfm.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Sincerely,
    Travis Walters

how-packages-work-for-buyers.cfm is not a long url.

search engines can understand 2000 characters long urls

I have to agree with that, the rate between length and information is fine.
The url isn't long and it describes the content of the page.

IMO the two process has different good benefit,
short url - easy for the user memorized your url,
long url - it can be used for SE snipet keyword which helps you in rankings. so the two must be consider.

There's no problem in using short or long URL.. but IMO, a good URL for me is the one that is easy to memorize/recognize by the visitors...
