Are proxies still the in-thing?

Ive been reading a bit on proxies but don't want splash out on a proxy server and spend time creating proxy sites to find it wasn't worth while. Anybody started a site recently and getting far with it?

Also is it worth investing in some of the packages people offer on this forum (i have seen one or two around) where they offer 1-2months hosting + promotions (basically do the dirty work for u). Will this be a better way to start a proxy site?

    Thanks for any advice :),
    Andy

You can consider hosting a proxy, people like Wazoo on this forum sells hosting for proxies then for 5 dollars pay a person to add your site to 40 proxy topsites etc.

Yeah they are worth it, but the bandwidth usage is ridiculous, i had to close down one of my successful proxys because it was draining 118% and growing of cpu usage slowing down my main sites

Use thewird or techentrace hosting. As far as I've been told, they are the best here.

And yes, there have been many claims of proxies making a lot of money on this forum, so I'm going to be jumping in too.

I think thats why you need to make sure to get special proxy hosting and not just host them on normal sites.

And maybe you were using CGI proxy, which is very resource heavy.

Yes it is, because its the least resource heavy and can easily be installed.

    Don't worry about that.

Its Open-Source anyways, so someone else will pick up the project and start developing it.

They can make money, but as others have said some of the scripts are broken to a degree and have no one developing them. As a result when I ran a few I made code modifications to fix bugs and add some added bit of security when it comes to people using the proxy to hotlink stuff. My method actually worked 100% of the time compared to some of the others which rely on referrers.

So I think proxy's are nice and all but I think there are better ways to make money that aren't hardware and bandwidth intensive.

    Only from the proxified pages.

You can keep it on the homepage. Use adbrite or adversal on the proxified pages.

So is it worth getting someone to do the work for you? I have seen a few posts offering submission to xxx amount of proxy directories and free hosting/free domain/cpanel for 1-2months for $10-20.
After that period they hand you the site to do as you wish.

$15 for the first; which to be honest hasn't worked out that well (www.kickznet.info)

$13.5 for the second, which will be running soon.

$10 for the third, which was put up today (http://www.concealus.info/)

Hoping they'll turn out good :D
