You can buy them off DiggBoss or DiggFreak I think.

Yes you can, along with exchanges if you want free ones (though I wouldn't suggest this type of method ;))

Then what are the shouts made for? Make some friends and when you want to emerge on the home page just give your friends a shout!

Because it is something as simple as ''manipulation'' and totally ruins the system by which sites get to the first page ;)

Digg have been known to find people who post there username on forums like this then ban them straight away. This is one of there very crude ways of finding people selling and buying diggs.

    "manipulation" ?
hmm... right now, there are so many stories appearing in Digg every minute. you need to get your stories noticed -- so you must have some initial diggs to get the ball rolling. and how could you do that?

you build a network of friends on Digg.
you digg their stories, they digg yours.
    is this not "manipulation" ?

btw, the community still decides which stories get to the front page. if crap stories make it to the front page, they will be quickly buried/banned. we just need those "initial diggs" to get our stories noticed by other members of the community. it does not guarantee frontpage placement, of course.

I never commented on whether or not it is ethical to ask your friends to digg for you.

Anything which is influenced by a deliberate action of yours can be termed as manipulation. Digg being Digg, the chances that people will resort to such tactics is higher. I do not endorse such tactics, but neither do I disapprove of them. A certain amount of it is fine, but beyond that, it takes the fun away. When you start to buy, you think of yourself and not the web community at large. I am not asking anybody to be a saint here. Do it, but take care that you do not overdo it.

It looks like the Subvert and Profit site finally got its act together, and is back up again now. You can buy both from them.

Of course you can. But I think the digg.com doesn't like it .It is a risk they think you are spammer.

I am pretty sure you can still buy them but I actually don't think they will help you that much anyway. Plus I don't think that Digg likes it very much.

MarcL, they don't like that there is automatic digging systems getting you on top of Digg.
But as far as the natural ways, they promote them themselves. Otherwise, they wouldn't have such a friend system and ability the shout a Digg submission to hundreds of people.
