Can you be penalised for too many links?

I would like to have my site submitted to 1000 directories which will take just over 10 days to do. Can my site be penalised for this when Google notice such a huge increase in links? Or will it instead help me?

    Hey there,

You can never be penalized for having too many links.

However, you do not want to increase the rate at which you get links too fast. If you do, this will set off an alarm, and your links may be devalued.

For directories, this is not usually a problem because not all directories are going to accept your request, and not all directories wil accept your link at the same time.

If you submit to 100 directories / day for 10 days, you should be fine.

My advice is to go for it :)

    Sincerely,
    Travis Walters

Given Google's recent degrading of directory authority, and the fact that there aren't 1,000 decent directories on the internet, I wouldn't bother.

Just find 1-2 half-decent directories in your niche, submit there, then look for links from other sites in your vertical where you're more likely to get some proper link authority.

    Hey there,

Just avoid paid directories. I do not think being there will hurt you, but all links from paid directories will probably be devalued.

Whatever you do never sell links on your website. Google has come down hard on these types of directories.

    Sincerely,
    Travis Walters

Do it in slow manner... Do build links fast...Google detect those doing it fast...

The main reason is that building backlinks in order to increase the PR... That what Google will think...

no... your not going to penalized but... submitting in 1000's of directories is not bad but try to choose the quality sites that you're going to link into your site...

In directory submission, you just have to pick the right category and choose the quality sites that are relevant with yours

Regarding the comment regarding there isn't 1,000 decent directories...

I am always trying to find some good directories. I search for my particular niches and things like that, but does anybody have a list of the top general directories? I see tons of lists to free directories, but are they "quality". If you have a decent website w/ good content, I would hope they would add your link???

For specific niches, you can easily obtain high rankings in SERPs by just doing directory submissions, using the most appropriate Keywords as Anchor Texts. I've done it for a few sites and it works perfectly.

I don't think submitting to directories is something bad. 1000 directories in 10 days is completely alright, because not all directories approve the links instantly, and even if they do approve them, not all of them get indexed all at the same time. Just make sure you vary the anchor texts when submitting to these web directories.

Well not really google is never going to penalize you for too many links but however if these links are coming from bad neighborhood (ie term referred to black hat sites or sites with spammy content) then nothing can be said google might slap you for it.

Some Black Hatters also practice google bowling that is they lower the rank of some high ranking site or worst get you banned. However google does not agree with the existence of google bowling...here's a google article on google bowling www. webpronews. com/expertarticles/2005/10/27/google-bowling-how-competitors-can-sabotage-you-what-google-should-do-about-it

I don't see how inbound links from bad neighborhoods is a problem as long as I don't link back, otherwise I'll start submitting my competitors to those sort of directories right now :)

if google penalized you for links pointing to you, any competitor could add your link to a bad site or loads of directories quickly and cause your website to fail, so google i very much doubt will penalize your site.

This was probably said before, but yes, you can be penalized. You cannot be penalized for the amount of links you have, but how quickly you obtain them. If you get 1 link one day and 1,000 the next, it's going to look pretty suspicious.

However, with directories you have nothing really to worry about. Directories are more of a gradual process instead of all at once. Not all of them will accept you in the first place, and the ones that do won't all accept you in the same time frame. Some take a couple days, some take a week, some could take a month.

So don't worry about it. :D

I'm going to be facing this problem soon, as I purchased 600 blog submissions to route back text links. Some of the blogs ( about 50 ) actually have a pagerank, few are PR2-4... and well our site is pretty new and has none, so hopefully it won't devalue the backlinks.
