Here's a directory script I found www.edirectory.com also I've heard that Esyndicat is gaining popularity, I think that they're only 2 years old but have some very nice features not offered on other directories. But u have to look for yourself Things to consider 1) Ease of use. 2) Company itself 3) Speed of execution, meaning how fast does it render pages. 4) Portability, meaning when there is an upgrade from version x.xx to x.x1, how easy is it to upgrade. If the program is divided into components eg, software, templates then you should consider each component. You don't want to get yourself into something which requires a programmer to upgrade versions or templates. 5) Features. I probably missed some stuff, but those general guidelines should get you in the right direction.
You did, like cost, number of bugs getting reported, number of duplicate templates used by its users, price of adding modifications if needed and so on. All scripts have their good points and all have their bad points depending on what you want one for. The OP asked for advice on directory software and out of the box and FREE is phpLynx which imho is probably the best directory script out at the moment barring none. The advice on don't get a template maker, I can't agree with, there are too many duplicate templates out there as there is, get a unique one with some unique features, copyright it and make sure no-one can dupe you then your on the right path. Just my totally bias opinion after using all three directory scripts.
