I think both because through blogs you can promote your site by posting your sigs. in forums..

Both are good but they are several factors to consider between blog and forum. Blogs are easy to manage and frequently updated so it is easier to be on top of serps while Forums are hard to establish and you really have to gather a lot of people to join the discussions.
Blogs are specific while forums are broad in topics. IMO, blogs are better for SERPs.

Both are excellent especially if you know how to optimize the titles of your blog or forum software.

I think both of them has different level of optimization to rank well in SERP. Blog with unique contents, using the right keywords with a good title can rank fast. While in forums you have to double your effort in optimizing it.

    Agreed.

Also both have slightly different quirks, a forum the content is generated largely by the members so you are continually getting fresh content added to your site. The downside, the users don't know SEO so the content tends to be less keyword rich with more "chatter" or lower value content.

A Blog on the other hand, you generally produce less pages of content but the content is well crafted and optimized.

So blogs you have alot more control over content optimization, forum you have more content but less control.

Forums are good for returning visitors, blogs are more friendly for SEO bots. I run several forums and I have visitors that return even 10 per day comparing with 1 or 2 visits on blog (for the same user). Forums visitors are more loyal, on blogs, they probably came from a search engine and after they got what they need, they will leave and next visit might be next time when he use the search engine again. I hope you got an ideea! Good luck!

Forums are good because there's always a fresh content and SE's love that. While on Blog, it can help you also but once you stopped updating your content then that's the start of your rankings to fall unless you have strong backlinks. :)

blogs have lot of content on the homepage - this works in their favor - especially for news based blogs.

my blog ranks much better than my forum for similar content.
