Google Penalizing Sites Involved in Link Sales - Search Engine Land Report

I know that the Harvard paper uses a certain paid link company that Google doesn't like. It looks like Google is now actively going after sites that it suspects are involved in "link sales".

I think there's a lot of gray areas about what Google thinks someone is paying for, such as the time it takes to review a site (blog or directory), advertising and hopes of referrals.

there is only think that google is against the paid links.

google wants to be the biggest link seller on the world. they are trying finish the competitive link sellers with this way

I built a website from scratch ... I take time to build it and make it reputable.
Then by God why the hell can't I do what I please on it ?

Yep, first the paid directories, then sites like TLA (or was it the other way around, TLA, then paid directories), next it'll be sites that use TLA and the like, then what next?

You CAN do whatever you please with your site. And Google has the perfect right to do whatever it wants with its site.

 

Google doesn't like paid links because it makes un-natural search engine rankings, but then it thinks its ok to do with its adwords program down the side of each search page. Its ok if google is making money, but not if you are.

 

The links google sells on its search pages do not pass PR to the websites and do not therefore try to alter the SERPs. If you have a site, you can sell links, as long as they dont pass PR, i.e. use the 'nofollow' tag, then I doubt google will punish you. I think this is fair enough.

 

so, how about if you buy a listed in Yahoo Directory? mmmm

I think that Yahoo Directory is known to be selective about who they allow, so doesn't qualify as a paid directory, according to Google.

There's a lot of gray areas about Google's policy. I think the best prevention to being penalized is to NOT state the benefits to being listed as "we have high PR" , etc.

I think the little mom and pop internet shops are the ones that could be negatively effected by Google's policy. They don't have the content necessarily, since they may be an ecommerce site, but they don't have the budget to pay for tons of advertising.

 

Google even says dont pay for link in webmaster section.

 

I agree. Not enough people are making this point though. The only reason why some folks are getting ANY money on the web is because of Google. I think more respect is due.

 

Yeh it doesn't alter the SERPs, it bypasses them altogether and sticks them on the first page of every search. As you well know most on the right and some at the top of the page. A lot of users don't actually realise these are ppc adwords links.

 

Exactly! Thereby making improving your SERPs that much more important. Forget PR, SERPs is what really matters. Here's my idea, if someone wants to implement it.

Unfortunately, we can by our way into the SERPs with Adwords, but this is an expensive option for the little guy, especially if they don't know what they're doing.

It would be really nice if Yahoo and MSN were more competitive. Google is almost a monopoly now.

Well that was an "awesome article" that took me to several different resources filled with knowledge
i hadnt known about as well as a better understanding off what happened in
Searchking vs Google and its verdict off ... "failed to state a claim upon which relief may be granted."

I also found a excellent article that was written by jill wallen which was very down to earth and
accurate in that it brings you to the core of understanding SEO and its true purpose and taught me
a few lessons.
