There's 2 ways - 1] have a really uncompetitive keyword/search term that nobody else has on their site (probably because nobody has ever searched for it) or 2] get lots of backlinks from established quality sites and have good original content that targets your keyword. I would be very very wary of anyone that says "we can get you to number one on Google". I have been working on an SEO project for about 7 months (one of my own sites) and have moved it from 600 to top 20 on Google. I might be (and I emphasize might) somewhat comfortable saying I could get you in the top 20, but it would be a long term project, 6 months min. Moving from the second page of Google to the front page of Google is very difficult, especially when you follow Google's webmaster guidelines. The posters above are right however...... if you have some obscure keyword and subject with minimal competition you can get to the top, but then who would be looking for you.
Actually It's possible to get your site ranked in serp top positions in a few weeks for most of the keywords, except for "sex" "poker" ans such (the competition is far to high there).. but i won't tell you the secrets, they're worth a lot. get some experience and try,try,try
1) be the first one ever to have a page on something, and have a lot of backlinks to it in a short amount of time 2) have a really, really old site that's been in position 1 for a long time
Without knowing the words you want to rank for it's not possible to say. As said above, some words/phrases are easy, some are almost impossible. Most competitive words will also take several months at least - try and rush and you'll trip an 'over-optimising' filter! There would be quite a few here people who could do it, but you can be sure that anyone capable of getting you to no 1 for a competitive phrase would rather do it for their own sites rather than someone else's, unless you pay a very large amount of cash! Before sticking your hand in your pocket be very sure about the credentials of the person you are handing it to. Personally I recommend you do it yourself and learn as you go along - start with an easy phrase which is a variation on your final phrase and work up eg if your 'real' keyphrase is 'fast cars' start with 'fast red Italian cars' or 'pictures of fast cars' etc and take it from there.
well boy you to really work hard for that and its not a days work , if you are looking for a very high traffic keyword it can take several months to get near it spend some time here on dp especially the google and seo forums and you will know how to reach there
two factors affects the ranking in SERPs: 1 - on-page factors (the keywords, the content, everything within the web page) 2- off- page factors (the links)
Here's what NOT to do: pay $150 to an SEO service that promises you "#1 position on Google". Do people pay that? Sure they do. Do they get #1? No way. What amazes me is that when I guarantee someone that I can get them within the top ten in a month, they think that's not good enough and they turn around and pay $150 to one of these scammers. It's amazing, because I am promising something I can deliver after looking at their site, niche, and keywords. (And BTW the only way anyone can evaluate your potential position and tell you if you can break through to the top ten is by looking at your site, the keywords you want to rank for, and the competition. NO one can guarantee a specific position, either.)
