    Hello friends,
I have checked so many directories which have PR greater than 5.One thing is surprising that most of the directories are paid?
why is that high PR directories are paid?
if you know any High PR directories which are not paid ,please list here.
    thanks

They are paid as almost all those type of Directories are heavily promoted and supported, and that takes time and money :)

backlinking from high PR directories helps to increase your website PR. Your website needs to reviewed and for that they are paid.

The high PR is usually (not always) due to high PR backlinks that have been paid for by the directory owner -- got to pay the bills somehow.

I am sure there are few free directories as well but I don't have any list atm.

One difference that you might like to remember when differentiating Paid & Free directory is that:
With paid directory, your listing stays for as long as it was promised (Yearly or Permanent)....... But with free directory, your listing can be deleted anytime as the owner have no contract to keep it :p

yes, dmoz is not paid, but it's editors take some money to list the websites!;) so, dmoz is a paid directory from that sense, remember all paid directories only charge for the reviews! if dmoz dose that, what's wrong! i guess we should start considering dmoz as paid directory!!:)

Dear OP! paid directories are promoted hugely, so there is a lot of traffic, which results in big hosting bills, editors review charges, further promotion budgets etc! and all these things costs a hell lot of money!! and this is the reason they are paid.
    regards,
    Uttoransen!:)

I can sum it up in one line " Quality does not come cheap " that does not mean that Free directories do not offer quality, But Paid directories also want money to review listings & also for promotion.

Because paid directory owners can afford to spend more on link building and promotion than a free directory owner. Add to this, many free directories convert to paid ones after they receive a good page rank and traffic.

High PR directories are usually quite old and also rather well promoted - hence a lot of hard work has usually gone into the process of getting that higher PR. Essentially its about paying for what you get - its all about making a worth while investment and helping to support the development of that specific directory!

The main reason there are many high PR paid directories is because people want money. Though there are many free high PR directories.

Funny I have a small list of them in a link in my signiture if you want to check.

As I paid and free directory owner, I can review paid listings quickly because there are not thousands of paid listings waiting in the cue but there are thousands of free submissions waiting to be reviewed in my PR4 Free Directory and it takes me too long to review those because submitters learned how to hide spam links and I am doing my best to avoid that which takes time.
Summary: Directory owner gets paid and gives time and makes more promotion.
Directory owner doesn't get paid and gives less time and makes less promotion.
