    I use:
GIMP because I ain't rich enough to waste my money on Photoshop, and I'm not a thief either. I fvckin hate thieves.

vim for html when I don't have to see anything... gEdit when I'm switching between browsers and code to stay in the GUI. That's Gnome's basic editor.

Test on Ubuntu Linux (my main machine) with FireFox 1.5 (never got around to updating it), Fake IE6 4 Linux, Opera9+, Konqueror for Safari (will never ever ever buy a Mac, dunno anyone else who has either so Safari's out for me : (
and also a Winblows machine at work with IE 3.1 (no CSS!), 5.5, 6, and 7, FF2, Opera, Lynx and JAWS.

Blows machine also has Flash which so far I'm mostly using to make banner ads which are too big for their britches...

Checking your site in many browsers is pretty important.

I use dreamweaver for any manual coding of html php ect... as I like its style. I occasionally use frontpage for is easy WYSIWYG editing, also I like being able to edit my sites live via front page extensions. I use fireworks for graphics and other design. I use swish for my animation, although I have used flash, I like swish and its easier.

I would suggest taking a look at http://browsershots.org/

<security rant>As for still running firefox 1.5; its easy to update your system in ubuntu, you can run the GUI or the following commands:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

With any system you should keep it totally up to date. Just because you are running linux does not mean don't have to update it.</security rant>

I am surprised how few people use Illustrator or Inkscape for graphic layouts. I use either of these for the layout over Photoshop. It is worth learning how to use a vector program because you are not as limited when designing a layout.

To code the site, I use Dreamweaver (I hand code everything, becasue WYSIWYGs make really sloppy code), TextPad, ConTEXT, or HTMLkit.

chickens, ubuntu also sends out regular security updates... and since I've got FF2 on the 'blows, I just keep 1.5 for testing mostly. *edit and Iceweasel sucked. Yeah the hippies at Debian don't want a web browser with a name and logo or whatever... FF isn't free enough for them I guess.

I've tried browsershots but usually the site is so congested, one in four of the sites I eend get seen.
And, you only get to look at a screenshot, which is of course nice (esp in my case for Safari on Mac), but i can't test anything like my menus, or if I were to have any Js, etc...
I read about another site called browsercam where if you pay, you get a dummy terminal connection to another machine and can test your site yourself. But for just Safari, I won't bother. Esp since in my country very very very few people use anything other than IE on 'Blows. And my sites don't interest the rest of the world.

I had trouble with Inkscape but it's still beta so I expect great things in the future. But I learned vector drawing in Flash (and still have a lot of trouble with CONTROL). If I ever invest in that tablet I keep saying I'll buy, I'll probably start using Inkscape more.

I guess really Flash is just more retard-friendly so I use it to export vectors : )

I do agree that firefox 2 has some memory issues and is bloated. They are fixing this in ff 3.0. I've ran the nightly version a few times and there is quite a difference. I can't wait for it to stabilize as it will really be an improvement.

I do disagree with not upgrading though. Firefox 1.5 has some major bugs in it that can easily be exploited. I would highly suggest against using it for this reason.

As for ice weasel; it is firefox. The reason for the name change is due to the fact that the firefox source code is open but the logo is not. Since they compile their own version of firefox the mozilla corp will not allow them to use the logo.

As for browser shots; it was and still is quite over loaded. They did implement a new feature fairly recently that allows you to extend the amount of time to wait for a screenshot. It will also give you an estimate on when the screenshot will be taken. It is not exactly ideal, but much better than just timing out.

Yeah I know. My husband got it on his Ubuntu because of Debian's dropping support for FF. It's gotta be more than a name change, though, because we've been crashing it regularly (FF2 also crashes a lot, but nowhere near Iceweasel did). I never downloaded it on my machine.

And yeah, I'm also waiting to see what's coming with FF3. I'd like to see it pass the acid test, etc. but it's not killing me to wait.

I'm still keeping 1.5(x). I go to Toyota.com and can't see the Flash, something to do with both the browser and my machine I think. Not a problem with FF2, or older FF on Blows or any other browser at all, but I never want to see that blank jittery crap on any page I write. Wish I knew what caused it though.

I hate to say it, but the acid test is a false representation of CSS standards. People around the opera community and w3 say that it is the real test for CSS compliance. Its not.

The real test for any client side language is to see if it works everywhere. As each browser is different they will always show up slightly different. This will never change. Firefox is slowly bringing everything around to a standard, ala ie7 is more standards complaint because of the ff competition.

Flash on Linux is a pain, Adobe has been making it better, but a pain none the less.

What "blank jittery crap" are you talking about? I am not quite sure what you mean by this. I might know a solution, but I am not quite sure what the issue is.
