the meta desc only there to display short description in google.
i have seen sites with no meta keyword or desc and rank 1st in competitive keywords.

IBL and content are very important in ranking.

But in my opinion: if it will increase the visitors then it will increase the CTR right? People are clicking on your listing in search results and this give your site a post in ranking so Google will think that your sites is relevant and more interesting for the visitors and may rank it higher?

Just put in your keywords and don't worry about it. It only takes 10 seconds to insert your meta tags.

Page content always plays the biggest role. Then comes the title and meta description. I have seen cases when meta keywords are shown on the side of the meta description if the meta description did not contain the search term but keywords did.
So I guess its a combination of all. Just varies on weight Google puts on them.

    I disagree.

Wasting "only" 10 seconds of your times (and probably you mean only for 1 page) means that you don't pay attention to what really matter in meta tags.

Relevancy of keywords, description and title is important - especially if you are competing with good players...

Research need to be done first.

I don't use keyword or descriptions unless I have a marketing message I want to appear in the engines.

Otherwise I let google pull the text from the page. Not had any problems :)

Nothing's wrong to have one, even you think googles doesn't consider. Having one is better than having nothing.

Yes Page content always plays the biggest role.So we must have a variable meta description for each page separately.

I'd still love to know if meta keywords affects AdWords quality scores, or what AdSense chooses to display on a page. I still kind of think that it might be a small factor.

There is an article on the official Google Webmaster Blog about Snippet and meta description (September 27, 2007)

Hard to say that the meta description should be neglected when you read:
And because Google truncates your title and your meta description if it is too long, we have created an SEO tool that allows to simulate what Google does with the title and the snippet: Meta Description Optimizer.

The meta description is vitel for "new" site and "foreign language" site .
And after few months ,it's still vital to prevent the supplemental hell.

yup it does help. it only take like 1-3 mins to write it so why not. SEs can understand your site better and visitors can know more about your site as well. I cant think of any reason why you should not put metatags.
