Which is the best Forum Software? IPB, VB, Mybb or SM?

I am planning to start an entertainment forum. Initially I want to use any free forum software available.

Many people say that VB is the best software for forums, but it is costly. I want to start the biz with software only.

Please suggest me the best free forums as far as SEO is concerned.

VB is the best but costly. But i reccomend SMF because it has loads of mods that make the forum great. Also it has a great seo mod.

    It depends on your needs.
    vB is best but costly.
    SM is free and customizable
phpBB is simple and free to use
IBP is also good if you buy paid vesion

My BB is is good but SM is better then this

SMF, better then MyBB....you crack me up.

SMF for starters is larger then MyBB, and has a very poor user interface for bothe embers and admins.

phpBB Just sucks. It has no sub forum support, design is bland and only a small ACP with limited features.

MyBB is by far the best, it is very user friendly, very easy to customize, with some great plugins that can be installed in just a few clicks. By defaullt, it is the same as a modded SMF or phpBB.

The best thing to do is try them all and see which one you like best, you can do this here:
    http://opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2124

You can try a tonne of free forum softwares. But MyBB is like vB in a way, it gives you so many options, I recently upgraded my vBulletin board to MyBB...

Yes, the feature set (particularly the mod toolbox) is nice and it is free. However, once you start thinking about SEO friendly URLS and a nice clean portal frontend and numerous other extended features you will need to get your wallet out again. I realise there are one or two free alternatives to the de facto standards in these areas, but if you want to run with the pack you'll need to spend like them too if using vB.

Why IPB? Isn't it slower than VB?

if we can afford, i like vbulletin. i like the layout and it's features/mods.

but we're using smf now, and it was okay.
there will be a new smf version too and i think it'll be good because of the default warning mod feature.

I started with SMF and switched to vBulletin.

I always knew I wanted vB because I am working on other sites with it since 2.0.

SMF was far from good from an admin perspective.
Implementing advertising was a pain in the *** for example.

I really would suggest that you switch to vBulletin as soon as you have the money. It will be the best choice of your admin live ;)

Without a doubt VB is the best. If you are going for the free option, I have used SMF on several of my sites, and it is good. However, I have just started to use MyBB, and I like the look of it. I just wish they would hurry up and develop a converter from SMF, because IMO MyBB is the better option.

VB has some GREAT mods to use that are both payed and non payed. The seo with vbulletin is pretty good too.

VB seeems to be very well respected , chekced there website they dont seem to ofe a LITE version or demo .........which is crazy ... thy should be tying people into get the forums and play and expiriment then hit them on the upgrades for cash or extra features ....instead most of us who dont know if their forums will hav any intrt will faff about with free ones until there making enough cash to pay for the VB
