Matt Cuts in one of his videos mentions that those are useless. He says that they in general tend to have a higher pr and that's the only reason. So a PRO .com site=PRO .gov site
edu and .gov links are usually older and considered "authority" too. So if I start a university and get an .edu domain, I will not get any benefit, but links from an existing .edu will help.
I'd be interested to see that video.. I can't find it on mattcutt.com I thought links from gov and edu were PREFERRED. MachineController-- How about links from personal niche-related webpages on .edu sites... like the kind students put up?
Do you have a url to that video? MC has said that .edu and .gov domains are treated the same as any other TLC. That may be true in regard to PR, but there's much more to ranking than PR.
I would have to agree with Matt Cutts on this. .edu and .gov links are worth the same as anything else in my book. Yea, they are usually older, which is usually why they almost always have PR. "Authority" wise, I wouldn't agree. I don't think they would have anymore authority than a .com, .net, .info..or anything else. A 6yr old .com has the same authority as a 6 year old .edu...
Yes,they are considered as "authority" sites, because usually they rank very high For those who asked...GOOGLE IT!!! it's should be within top 5
You are right. To add to this, only certain high quality .edu sites pass significant value to your link. You know what i mean by high quality right? Hardvard or MIT etc
Old .edu links pass huge amoung of link value, 3 years old pr5 link will pass you more link value, especially for anchor text serps that 1 year old pr6.
I always think that what matters is which site not what domain it is, so I don't care whether it's .com, .edu, ..etc.
I've never bothered trying to get lots of .edu or .gov links, despite the many lists floating around here. I'd like to see some sort of proof that a site was significantly helped more by getting a link from a .edu or .gov than it would have been with the same PR link from a .com.
I recently noticed one of my domains had 100's of high PR .edu backlinks, when i checked an .edu Library Blog was using a free Wordpress Theme with my link. My rankings did jump a bit, but funny enough not for the anchor in the link.. Silly edu people.
i really don't think that .gov website have a strong trustrank only because ot the .GOV extension. But certainly because they are well known websites of big adminitratives sections, well linked...etc
I saw the same video. The TLD means nothing, except with country specific domains and geo targeting. An edu with a PR4 backlink has the same authority as an .info with a PR4 backlink.
Ah, here is the proof that we have been looking for a long time ,... but it is a good marketing ammo for directory owners..
