I'm seeing some big SERP swings on a large number of keywords

    http://www.googlewatchdog.info/2007/10/serps-taking-bumpy-ride-on-good-ship.html

I created a tool that shows the variance in SERPs for a group of about 100 keywords that have stable SERP values. These are keywords I no longer optimize on but which have had steady results page values for several months. The keywords are spread out over about 6 industries, and I calculate the SERP values on strong websites that are least 18 months old and were SEOed using only white hat techniques.

Here's how the variance numbers work:

    • Variance of 5-10 is the norm
    • A variance above the norm and up to 20 or 25 usually shows something is happening with the index
    • A variance above 25 shows a fairly major change to index, possibly indicating an algorithm update from Google

In the last week, I've run my test a couple of times, with variance values all above 20, indicating something brewing. I ran a test today, and the variance was 61, a number I've never seen.

Read my blogpost for more information on what I've seen and how the tool I created works.

Throwing the dogs a bone: dare I say that Google is planning on something big ({gasp} maybe a real TBPRU?) for the end of October or beginning of November? Just remember to take my results with a grain of salt - I don't have inside information, and my tool can't be 100% infallible. Read the blogpost for some other explanations I offer for the wild SERP swings I've seen.

That's my opinion also (although you know what they say about opinions:)).

I doubt it will be as earthshaking as big daddy, though.

Fastweb, interesting article. However, I can only say it as rumour, unless you can claim your findings are true.

Unfortunately, you didnt share the tool with us. If you do, am sure more people can test the results and report their findings.

Yup, it's probably a result on a new algo that devalues paid links, and buying links was the main SEO technique for quite some time!

Either you've been penalized for selling paid links/featured links or the G is re-evaluating your ranking, but that's just my guess.

Well i know ive never sold any links for that site, just on my directory. Only thing ive done to promote this site is the normal directory submissions, articles etc..

Im guessing its some kind of fluctuation in the SERPS.. ive seen this problem alot lately here. Maybe wait a few days and it will be back. Theres no reason why a site would be average #21 then drop off completely.

Then it's the latter, Google re-evaluating your SERPs, which is normal. Same thing happened to one of my sites. It ranked consistantly at about 150 for the main keyword then disappeared completely! About 4 weeks later it returned at #12. :D

The tool is a Windows based application, and I'm probably not going to share it on the web other than as a subscription based tool. I described in fairly good detail how the tool works, although I didn't publicize the actual algorithm I use to come up with my variance figure.

The only "rumour" mentioned in the post is regarding a TBPRU, and the caveat I included with it.
