I just transferred all my 3 websites (around 6 gigs) to a new server. The best way is manually to do everything. I archived all files and dbs, then pushed them to a new server. Takes a lot of time though...

    Hi

What do you mean by push to a server. ?

People told me i should make a complete backup of my website, download the whole 8 gig to my computer and then upload it to the new server.

That will lake forever to do and i only have a 3 gig cap on my internet connection

Is there a way to transfer the online backed-up files to the new server without the need to download it ?

PS: sorry for posting this in the wrong forum:eek:

any help would be appriciated as we are trying to figure out the most effective way to transfer the site, it would be easy if it were just a few html files, but it is tons and tons of movies and db's .

Is there a website that lays out techniques to transering db's?

    Thanks for any help.

Thats the exact problem I was facing as I'm paying for the internet a lot, and dont have unlimited traffic (as it is in Moscow, St. Petersburg.).

Here is what I did, I ordered a new server first, then archived all files on the old one and placed them on a public domain. The next step is you are logging in to the new server, then download that archived file from

http://www.yoursite.com/files.rar for example. It doesnt take long, since the server's speed is huge, mine was downloading at 1Mb/sec.

After downloading it you just set the permissions on it, and thats it.

That was on windows box via remote control. You might have a different server or not even a dedi box, I dont know.

Why not ftp the files directly from your old server to your new server ?

I can do it for you if you are on windows server, not for free of course.
