Wordpress: what's the diff between tags & categories ?

    I'm new to wordpress, and even newer to V2.3 and i'm confused:

    Can someone explain the difference between categories and tags?

    im guessing it is so u can have some kind of tag cloud running.

    I've wondered what the tags are for. I'm really not sure. I just ignore them.

    both things serve the same purpose, they just list everything within them when clicked. I think it's just a user preference deal, some people would rather use one more than the other.
