http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21142564/ Convicted tax evaders arrested in N.H. CONCORD, N.H. - A couple convicted of tax evasion were arrested peacefully at their Plainfield home Thursday night after holing up at the fortress-like compound for months, the U.S. Marshals Service said. Ed and Elaine Brown were convicted on federal tax charges in January and refused to turn themselves in to authorities when they were sentenced in April to five years and three months in prison. It was not immediately clear how they were taken into custody.
Even IF it was legal... Just because government legalizes theft wouldn't make it legal. I wouldnt' expect anyone indoctrinated in public school system to know who William Blackstone was, but he wrote something to the effect that unjust law has no validity anywhere in the world, it's our responsibility to resist organized racket Browns didn't do the smartest thing though
Can you provide some references or sources for this? I'd be interested to read about these people and what arguments they used.
Of course it would make theft legal the same way decriminalizing pot would make pot use legal. Theft would still be immoral, but it would absolutely be legal.
I just read in yesterday's newspaper about a man named Joel Axberg who was acquitted by jury. His argument was that he paid his employees in gold in silver, so he wasn't engaged in 'commerce'. ('commerce' as defined by Internal revenue code is different from common meaning of this word) A few month ago IRS lost case against Tom Crier, he is a lawyer and haven't paid taxes in years. I think Peter Hendrickson has the best argument. IRS can't figure out how to cook up a case against him, so far (they've been trying for a few years now). His website is losthorizons, .net or .com , I forget. A few thousand people who read his book are not paying taxes anymore. But the best thing is that using his method, you can even get IRS refund your taxes for previous years. That may be hard to believe, but he posted a copy of his refund check from IRS on his website, as well as a few hundred checks that IRS sent to his readers. Basically, his book shows that 'income' as defined in I.R.C. refers to salaries of government employees or profit from government enterprises only. Also, there is a guy named Joe Bannister, a former IRS agent. I am not very familiar with this case, but IRS sued him and they lost as well.
That's exact opposite of what William Blackstone believed, and he was perhaps most acknowledged legal expert of his time. We might not even have the Constitution if it wasn't for him. That's exactly why we have jury nullification - if the law is wrong, then it is also invalid.
Thanks demosfen. It's absolutely stunning what people do not know about the validity of the laws they live under.
Jury nullification occurs when a jury returns a verdict of "Not Guilty" despite its belief that the defendant is guilty of the violation charged. The jury in effect nullifies a law that it believes is either immoral or wrongly applied to the defendant. It does not invalidate the law. I totally agree
