Hi all my fellow dp posters here, I have submitted my blog to dmoz direction(one way link), how long time will it take approx to review my blog and accept ?
Wrong forum. Post this in the DMOZ sub-forum and one of the DMOZ editors that frequent this board possibly will answer all your questions. I'll request a mod to move this for you.
The dying part is not so funny, but getting listed in DMOZ.... Yeah, that is a good one. When it comes to poor customer service DMOZ corners the market.
They don't give you any time frame about possible review. A review also does not mean you will get accepted there.
you seem to forget that dmoz's customers are not webmasters. webmasters are dmoz's suppliers. it would be good to see even a single thread on digitalpoint regarding dmoz's customers. they truly are the forgotten end when it comes to the critiques on this site. And that is why so much of the criticism is misplaced. it is making unmarket-researched assumptions about what dmom's customers want without investigating who they are.
You are right which makes whole thing even more ridiculous, suppliers are wasting time to get their product put on a shelf of a supermarket nobody ever visits since most of it shelves are empty anyway and you can rarely find what you want. 99% doesn't even know it exist and 1% that does know almost never use it.
if i read you right, you is saying that 99% of the people who use dmoz data do so unknowingly via google directory or other dmoz rdf republishers users. if they have any complaints, those complaints get directed to google directory (or wherever). they do not get aired here. the other 1% do know the difference, but chose to use google directory (etc) anyway. so dmoz's shortfalls are simply being routed around by wise choice of a republisher. isn't that how it is meant to be? why is that so often seen as a customer service problem?
Customer service is non-existent in most cases when dealing directly with DMOZ and the only thing that is close of official is RZ and that is filled with editors that for the better part dislike their customers. THAT is a customer Service problem
Someone uses Google directory? I get zero traffic from it and about a visitor a day from DMOZ. Since takes some skill to dig up Google directory I doubt too many persons see it and they are probably webmasters constantly checking to see if by some miracle it got updated.
I think we give good customer service. Trouble is you want us to serve web masters and as an ex-editor, Q, you know well that we collect sites and orghanize them for surfers. They are our customers.
You are right once again. Silly of me to think that webmasters surf the internet Who owns the sites that are listed? Webmasters? Not in most cases! Count the geocities sites listed or the yahoo groups...now tell me those are owned and submitted by "webmasters". I seriously think not, yet those people are treated as such! Go on, deny it... seemingly according to you anyone that submits a site is not worthy of being heard out. So yeah, EXCELLENT record on the ODP CSR skills
if that is the average referrals from dmoz then dmoz is being used at least 4,500,000 million times a day (once per business listed). that makes it a decent sized resource. how many sites that you manage have that traffic volume? i tried half a dozen google searches, all two words with one of them being directory. the dmoz or google directory was in the top three in each case. you may be underestimating the vocabulary of the average web searcher.
I doubt it, out if 11 deeplinks I get one visitors if I'm lucky... and all these categories even have a backlink from Wikipedia! True, I have never searched for something with world directory in it.
Ok, Q, how about we go with one of the suggestions touted in ODP that we take no more referrals. I would go with that, it would solve the problems and put the onus on editors to find the sites they want listed. Would that please the owners of sites? If owners or anyone else want to submit a site for consideration they are welcome to do so at present, but then to start bleating that it is not looked at fast enough or we are corrupt because it has not been listed is perverse. They don't have to offer the site at all, they choose to do so. And I will just repeat it again, we don't put the directory together for the benefit of owners of websites, the directories aims, and I think it mostly fulfils them, is to collect and organise websites for the benefit of those who are seeking information. If you want to run one for webmasters, owners or uncle Tom Cobley, be my guest go and do it, but this is how ODP runs and mostly editors stay because they want to offer something to the surfer. Change that and I go for starters.
we put the directory together for the benefits of "senior" editors. I just completed what you wanted to say but you were too shy to actually say it.
Your joking right? Unless your proud of adult, pills and other spammy categories most of DMOZ is useless to those seeking information, at the moment it seems DMOZ is more interested in letting any useful categories to rot.
I don't think she is joking. She honestly believes that listings in good categories are from nothing but sites from webmasters and that the spammier categories that get additions daily or weekly are not. At least that certainly fits within the logic. If that is not the logic, then they need to ponder why good editors get ousted, and why there are so many reds (from robozilla) and dead categories with several submissions that have been there for month and months (I'd say years, but the crash stopped that). DMOZ is not there for the webmaster or owner of websites...that much is certainly obvious. What is not obvious is how they are here for the average surfer.
May I modestly say I regard myself as a good editor, do you count yourself as a good judge with a couple of dozen edits under your belt, Q? You are entitled to your opinion, of course, and your opinion is that ODP does not serve anyone. So why are you here discussing a dead duck that serves no one. At least I know that I am here because I think it is the best, not perfect, but the best and I will give of my experience to help those who have problems with it and where people simply want to trash it, which seems the majority of posters here for most of the time I have been posting, then I will mostly defend it, but not always. So tell us, Q, after giving up editing after 5 minutes why do you spend hours here mostly getting nowhere because no one really bothers with your opinions, even if I am male or female
