As freelancer I used to charge:

    1) Static site - £400 ($800)
    2) Dynamic - ASP/ .Net (dont do PHP) - £400 - £15,000 ($800 - $30,000)
    3) Flash - didnt do it

Ultimately the part 2 was unlimited but £15k was the largest project I won

You could always look into hiring a junior designer...

They tend to be cheaper, and if you find the right person who understands your style, your site will look just as good.

As mentioned before, though, prices vary depending on number of pages, code work, specific elements you want on your site, if graphic design is involved, SEO, and overall time.

On my end (I'm a freelance web/graphic designer) it also depends on whether I'm following the project (with updates) or if I have to train the client to do his/her own updates, etc.

Best thing to do is have a very clear idea as to what you'd like to have, and to contact a designer with all the information on the get-go. They'll be able to give you a quote, and then you can pick and choose. :)

There are a lot of factors to consider when charging. i.e. quality of work, whose the client, time, etc.

I've seen people charge 500 for a 5 - 7 page website. I've seen people charge 5,000 for the same thing. When you look at the sites, you can clearly tell the difference. So ask your self how much is your time worth, and what's the quality of design / code that your offering. How much would you like to make per project?

If you starting out you'd want to do things a little cheaper to build the client trust and have people stick with you, and also because your a freelancer (solo gig).

    Note: Flash Sucks

    Flash does indeed suck.

Where do you guys find assignments? I know about Elance, but one has to pay in order to get assignments through their site. Are there any better (cheaper) alternatives? Please delete this post if it is irrelevant to this thread.

The trade off with lower membership fee freelance sites is that their per project percentage is typically higher. In my freelance days I used to use Guru and the first project I won cost more in extra per project costs than having paid the membership fee would have.

Plenty of freelancer sites, build your own website/ a few low cost or free ones and get word of mouth advertising (select who you build for carefully), forums, business networking events etc - plenty of low cost or free ways of getting advertising

    We typically charge:

    1. Starting at $500.00
    2. Starting at $1000.00
    3. Starting at $1500.00

Again these all depends on how much graphic design we have to do, number of pages, how complex is the database programming, etc.

    I hope these helps.

Many times I do hourly, but some projects for individuals i would price at:

    1. HTML website - $400 + (matters on complexity)

    2. HTML + PHP code -$800 + (matters on how much php)

    3. Flash website - Won't touch it.

When I design a site for a client I use a lot of graphics and color, custom to them... I do not design a site with a blue background, bold red text, and a cheezy logo created in MS Paint. If that's what you're going to design folks, then $100 is good enough. If you're serious, design a sweet site, want to do this for a living, then anything over $500+ for a basic .html site.
