Interesting post. Thanks for sharing. If a person do on-page optimization and create a blog on the same website and start promoting blog, he can get on top in search results for any "Broader Term".

What about article directories, etc. Don't they have thousands of outbound links, or how is that different?

I think you misunderstood the directories. Article directories have link to article page and article page has link to your page. So that page don't have much links.

I don't put much value in just a Text link, I have found my directories work a lot better if links in it have some descriptive text aswell - like directly below the text link title.

Have a look at Google when you run a search for an example, and even the paid ad's - they all have a descriptive text below them.

MYTH : More than 50 links on a page is spam.
This maybe true for a Blogger Blog, but not for all pages and sites, again refer to Google Search results - on a normal search result you will see each result has 3 links, then add the paid ad's 5+, then Googles own llinks, now that's over 50 links (about 65 actually) - now are we calling Google a spammer ?

As long as there's enough actual content and text then the link count wont be an issue, I always try to out weigh links with 5 times as much text - so for each link try to have a minumum of words - 10 links = 50 plain words.

I've noticed with my site that the more actual link exchange I've been doing, it knocks my site down in the search results. Maybe it's time for some link exchange cleanup?

Thanks, that makes sense now, so having like an articles page with links to 50 other articles on my site isn't a bad thing.
