According to Matt Cutts, .edu dont have special weightage.
But a link from .edu can be considered good cos generally, .edu sites offer good information/content and so, are usually trusted by SEs. If you setup a linkfarm on a .edu then I dont think a backlink from it will be of any use. Peace !!

Generally .edu sites have more weight simply because they are seen as authority, thus more people link to them making them an authority even when they aren't.

If you take a .com site and give it exactly the same links, same text, everything, the page is worth exactly the same.

Back links from .gov, .mil, .edu have more weight age compared to other domains.

However, search engines are smart enough to classify the links coming from subdomain.domain.edu and www.domain.edu and weigh them accordingly.

Search engines can also analyze the contents on the page from where you are getting the back link and relevancy to your web site's contents.

I hope you understand what I mean to say.

Hmm.that mean, It is no use to get a backlink from subdomain.domain.edu right?
It wont take any effect on our website PR.

It will be of some help if its not a linkfarm and if it is kinda relevant to your site's content.

Getting high PR is not about the TLD names, .edu, .orgs, and other TLD extensions are just the same but it differs in the method of link building.
