When does does google consider a site backlink spamming?

I am new to all this and I am just wondering how much backlink building I should do at a time. My worst fear is having Google consider my site (http://www.gobustbookies.com) as being spammed because of the amount of backlinks I am doing in a day. There have been many people that say slow and steady is the way to go with link building. Is this true or not?

If you do your link building manually/naturally it should be fine. It you use software or automation you should be careful.

Is the backlink is the exchange link between 2 sites?

Let say you have 1 site and me 1 site. Then on you site put my site link and vice versa.

Am I correct about the definition of backlink? I'm still learning in this internet marketing. :)

Well it depends on the quality of the websites you're exchanging links with. If your link is on a 'link farm', google will most likely penalize you for it.

No thumb rule but build the links in such a manner so that it looks natural to SEs. Getting more number of back links all of the sudden is also fine but stay topical and don't just get back links from any good for nothing directories / websites.

What if your site is catering a well written and illustrated guide to market a business and all the news, press, related blogs and forums are talking about your website. The number of links will be of course more and that too within short period but that looks natural. Right?

Well, if somebody have other opinion, please tell, I would be happy to learn that.

Well i wonder how, Google in this case, would do to determine the situations you are talking about. Google spider, like other SE spider, requires a sitemap to be sure to follow your links inside your page! In my opinion, it's a very primitive and approximative program. After caching all web pages into their system, they analyse every link they find and give them a relevance mark. This procedure is a secret to everybody, and every observation on these cases are pure speculation. Let's however make some comment and questions:

Why would this be? The result on the web using automation is exactly the same as manualy build link page. Spiders cannot analyse programming code, only the result of it and the result in one case and the other is the exact same. Maybe if your automation linking brings you to link to non ethical sites, banned sites, mirror site, then it will lead to a probable ban situation for your site. Also if your generated pages of links are too long to be crawled properly they won't be able to analyse it.

Well let say i build a page with links and publish it to my site only after getting 1000 links. Would you consider it "unnatural"? would you be banned for this. A site like this one generates, by the action of guys like us, how many new links a day? maybe thousands just because of signatures no? is it being banned by SE?

I participate in 2 automated linkexchange program with my site. With Backlinkspider and Telalinks and sofar i got no banned situation however my site is really not a relevant one...

If you're are automating directory submissions you might generate 5000 backlinks in 1 day - you would be banned. But if you are submitting manually you would only submit 10-100 and wouldn't be banned.

This would be completly arbitrary. what if i build manually and honestly these 5000 links and publish them at once manually? would this be considered also a motive to ban a site?
Again, how much links does a site like this forum generates in one day? Probably more than 1000, only with signatures!!! Would Google ban it for having generated between 2 visits of its spiders more than 10000 links?

So how do you make the difference between a site that suddenly gained 5000 links because the webmaster has published them there (honestly or getting them somewhere else at once), and a site that generates itself the same 5000 links just by the participation of its users?

I really don't think they would ban you for having generated that amount of links and probably, if it was the case, Google should ban themselves first because they generate much more than that in just one hour!
What i believe is when you make a massive submission of links to others sites, you might link to sites that bad ethics could lead to ban.

Anyway, since noone exactly knows how it is done, and since some SE also changes their own rules from time to time, we can only guess about that matter. The only material we can rely on, in the case of google, is http://www.google.com/webmasters, and that really doesn't say much about motives!

They would ubviously not use a static number. They would use an equation like -

    bad amount = 500 + (total links * 10%)

So a large website could get a maximum of 10% of it's current links (+500) but a new website could get 500 in 1 day without getting flagged.

Google aren't stupid, they would account for the website's size in deciding how many backlinks are too many to create in 1 day.

How can you say Google is stupid...they are the most popular search engine for a reason, and it's not because they're stupid.

Being suspicious is masses of links from blogs is good for Google to be doing to improve our SERPs.

As of right now I have been loading it to a bunch of free directories. Will I be penalized because they are general directories and not relevant to my site?

If all the above is true, shouldn't I be buying a massive amount of links to my competitors sites?

You can submit to free directories 24 hours a day and seven days a week till you exhaust your directory list. Most directories take their sweet time approving free listings, so there is no possibility of being tagged for too many backlinks to fast.

When you pay for advertising, try to gauge your monthly budget. And build consistently. I think a bigger trigger is getting 5000 backlinks one month and 200 the next. Keep it steady and you'll be under the radar...

Keep in mind that the pages your links may appear on will not be indexed immediately either. Especially if you submit free listings, your page may end up on the 30th page of that category if your pr is low.

    Good luck

Automation is fine because google will not discover all links at the same time! :)

Any rate that you can build yourself "by hand" shouldn't draw flags...

But if you utilize an automatic program, then potential for problems arise.
