I am slowly doing more and more SEO on my sites. What's the generally accepted thought on article submission - particularly how it could apply to Google rankings? Should I write or hire writers for articles and submit them to article directories? Is this a good tactic? Of course I understanding this would need to be done as part of the overall mix. I just wanted to get people's thoughts on effectiveness on this technique. Thanks for your thoughts.

I do not recommend submitting to hundreds not even barely a few because your wasting your time doing that.... Submit to Ezinearticles, Buzzle, Article Dashboard, Article City, Go Articles theirs maybe a couple other good ones but really Ezinearticles and Buzzle are the best from my experiences and they are typically the only directories to really show up pretty well in Google... So don't waste your time submitting your articles to hundreds of worthless directories....
Ezinearticles, Buzzle, Article Dashboard are proven good. Submit your article here if you don't want to waste your time.
I think article submission has no value when it comes to improving SERP but it can still give traffic to your site. I haven't seen article in article directories that is counted as backlinks in google.
Article marketing still works great is an effective weapon in online marketing... Target your keywords in your resource box and you will see improvements in SERPs.
Wrong, wrong and wrong again....Google is counting all 1700 links from Ezinearticles for me. Oh and guess what I'm in the top ten for a pretty damn good market.
i agree with the above person. every time i post a blog post, it's automatically top 10 or 15, before article marketing. then i publish to about 20 directories. then then my ranks go up. now i'm waiting for 5 number 1 positions. article marketing is still all good but there's a right and wrong way to do it.
I use articles as a big part of my SEO strategy and I've been able to have sites that rank quite well.
You forgot a couple wrongs in there somewhere. Any activity, and that includes article submission, that provides relevant and contextual backlinks helps improve rankings (SERPs and PR). The great thing about article writing is that YOU the writer gets to pick the subject and fill it full of applicable keywords and content. Each link may not mean much, but neither is a single potato. Show me a stack of 10,000 potatoes, and it is substantial (for some reason I'm on an analogy kick today - must be Friday). Plus, submitting an article to a site like Netscape that gets a lot of readers can really reap rewards for your site.
article submission is a good way of one way link building. and you can hire some or you can write your won article (if you have time to write article). i hire some to write my own article because of time
This is great information. One thing that I'm hearing is that there is a right and wrong way to do this. Is there a current best practices? Is there a post somewhere that already outlines good article submission strategies? It's so hard sometimes to wade through what is good information and what is bunk.
marklbishop - different people use different techniques. I've had success with my techniques but others have had success with theirs too. So I'm not so sure there's a "right and a wrong" ... I of course believe my method is the most effective (and by that I also mean less time spent in submitting)
Where do you get your information that article directory links aren´t counted? If this was the case SEOs wouldn´t be using it.
The one thing I don't like about EzineArticles is that it appears they don't work weekends. If I submit on a weekend or holiday, I have to wait for the next business day.
Huh? What do you mean if my links are real? Believe me my links get counted, I'm not going to waste my time to go to G and get a screenshot to show you they count but I'm sure many others will vouch that Most article directories will give you links that follow...trust me
