whats your opinion on this, should mods in communities be paid. if yes it would be monthly or on basis of their performance ?
I know some people who don't pay their mods but send them stuff for Christmas and such. I think thats the best of both worlds
hey, heh... I do that! Bday cards, christmas list, even small gifts. But I consider them gifts to friends more then payment to moderators.
I'm happy to moderate for free, just to generate a bit of extra exposure and to help people out. If you pay someone there's always a concern they'll just do the bare minimum for the money, instead of contributing fully as they should do. That's my take anyway.
Depends really on how much work they do. Some mods will do it for free while others will want money. The thing to do is to get your best posters to hopefully help you out for free in exchange for a link on your site or something else.
I think mods should be paid something based on the depth of what they do. I know that one forum I visit pays $400.00 per month to one moderator/forum manager but that person is responsible for the advertising as well.
This is very tricky to answer. On one side you have the fact that some, not all, moderators work very hard to keep a forum clean from scammers and spammers. On the other hand, it would create an incentive to do whatever is necessary to become a moderator, which could decrease the quality of the moderators. Also for those moderators that don't do a lot of work, it doesn't seem fair or just, that they be paid. Suggestion: Setup up a donation system for moderators and frequent posters. Also setup a nomination system for the "frequent posters" to get paid. Otherwise people would just post anything and everything just trying to get paid. Actually the best option would be to leave the adsense revenue for posters only. Then setup the donation system for the moderators. Or maybe there should just be a donation system for everyone. Instead of the useless rep points... have it setup so if someone felt like a user was very helpful, moderator or not, then they can donate a flat rate, such as $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, etc. Since the people are going to be funding this, then there shouldn't be any worry of abuse of the system. Also make the amount that a person has had donated to them, transparent. Additional Suggestion: Setup a system so that if a poster is making useless posts all over the place just trying to get donations, or is soliciting donations (which should not ever happen), that functions in a way that if x number of users complain about this violation in a 24 hour period, they lose the ability to receive donations for 30 days.
It quite depends on what your forum is and what kind of work your mods need to do?Actually mods are very important to forums,so if i were you i would like to pay a little money to hire some nice men to join.
Since I last posted I have become a paid moderator for a forum that I frequent. It isn't much, but enough that it can support my domain purchases every month, or any other small purchases. It is $150 to be exact. However, I didn't ask to be paid, the forum creator offered it to me.
I sometimes pay admins. Moderators I send money too every now and then for birthdays or christmas. Also when I sell a site I normally give staff something.
I have ran a few forums, some very successful and I have always hold the notation that. To be a member in a status of power is a privilege not a given right, they have earned the right to be a moderation as they want to dedicate time to a forum, payment should not be given, its a status that they are helping the community and paying them makes them become more like employees and a business which can be very tiresome.
I was given the mod title, because I was always reporting the violators of the golden rule of the forum... no affiliate links. The money I consider to be a huge bonus. If I wasn't getting the money, I would still do what I do.
