How come Buddhists, Christians etc. can protest peacefully, but Muslims not? For example:

    Myanmar http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070927/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_myanmar

You see the Buddhist monks got all sympathies from all over the world, Because they use no violence. But Muslims almost always are with guns when they protests and killings often occur during their protests.

You can not compare Buddhists to any religion, radical Islam is a way far... Buddhists are extremely peaceful people. They wouldn't raise a stick in protest let alone the gun.

Well, there are radical Muslims those kill, there are radical Hindus those kill, there are radical Christians those kill. But there aint a radical Buddhists that can kill. At the best a radical Buddhist will go on hunger strike and might kill himself.

I had been in debate with one Indonesians friend, who happened to be Muslim and very firm believer. He was saying about the atrocities done by Christians in Indonesia against Muslims to justify the killings of Christians and Buddhists.

When I asked why killing Buddhists? merely because they do not share the same beliefs as his? He claimed Buddhists are also spreading hatred against Islam. How, I asked. then he came up with a story where a Buddhists was telling few Muslim kids that killing and eating animals is against the will of god, because every living thing has the same soul. That in his view offended Koran and Allah. The Muslim guys around that part beaten up that monk and barred him from coming to that area again.

Too good you guys didn't behead him, thats all I could have said.

Then he came up with two different stories, one was about a monk accidentally killing a thief, that was trying to steal a gold idol of Buddha. and another of a Buddha follower charged with rape allegations. two individual cases that has nothing to do with the religion. I'd said, but he kept saying that this proves Buddhists are not as peaceful as they say they are...

BTW, in Thailand, a mainly Buddhist country they execute drug dealers, murderers etc. When asked why they do that one of the chief buddhists explained: "By killing these people we protect the lives of others."
I am far from being a buddhist but I completely agree with this line of reasoning.

If somebody calls himself a good man, but kills others is he reallye a good man?
Same thing with Christianity, one may call himself a Christian, but if he does not follow Christianity he is not a Christian.

all main religions, christianity, islam, judaism, hinduism, and sikhism, have fought bloody conflicts. none can say that they are any better than the other.
however, buddhists have a completely different mindset, they believe that if they as much as harm a spider or a bug it will seriously jeopardize their chances of reaching 'nirvana', and could mean that they are reincarnated as a lesser life form. a simplistic summing up there, but you get the drift.
however, the famous hindu leader mahatma ghandi fought india's colonisation by the british government in the 1940's by initiating peaceful protests, frequently going on hunger strike if any of his followers resorted to violence, which they unfortunately did, but his policy was one of obstinate yet peaceful protest, the same as the buddhist monks.
i only hope that the monks have the same success as ghandi.

proteindude when you talk about a government's use of the death penalty within a country that is mainly buddhist, that doesn't mean that the government officials are strict buddhists as in the case of the buddhist monks.
no buddhist monk would ever support the death penalty.

"Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." - Jesus

Funny how atheists seem to know a lot more about the bible than those who proclaim to live by it.
