For my new directory I am toying with the idea of not creating a directory category, what do you all think of this? I know I will lose a lot of money by doing this, but I feel that visitors wouldn't go to a directory to find another directory, so why should I make a category for them? Is this smart? Should I at least have a "Internet > Searching" category?
IMHO yes you will lose money but its your directory but think about it yahoo dmoz and google all have a category for directories
That's great Bobby. It's a unique concept. If its something like Gimpsy I think it is a nice idea that is outside of the usual stuff. Just make on that level IMO nouns, adjectives, adverbs.
you should cater for all sites, and all browsers. When i go to other paid directories, i often go to directories category to find some new sites
If you want one put it in, i will be adding a directory catagory, whats the use of having a resource to find things if you cant find what your looking for. ( i will add i will screen not only this catagory but all and any failing the DownUnder test wont be listed )
Yeah to submit to, I don't want 1,000 directory owners and 0 average internet users on my directory. Vice versus thank you very much
I have thought of that before, but never went through it, unless I can really heavily promote to the mass market instead of webmaster forums only...
well should i create a general web directory and forget the business or health category? if its a general web directory, you should have all types of sites. IT doesnt have to be a top level category, it could be under internet if you like...
Keep in mind that when you develop a directory you should be focused on building a quality and useful internet resource.
Yeah it is easier to build a quality and useful resource if you don't have to sift through 5,000 crap directories to find 1 that might provide any use. But after more thought, here is what I think I will do. I will allow some niche directories since they provide quality to the suer, and a couple of general directories in a "Information Finding" category or something like that. But I can guarantee that I won't be accepting many directories, they will really have to provide use to be accepted. It irks me to just see a mass of directories interlinking.
That is a good question and i hope i can answer it this way. My marketing for my directory will not rely on the internet alone, I will be spending some big $ on the traditional marketing methods, by this i will advertise in newspapers, radio and television, my target audience are the general public. I will be starting slow with several specific models to test outcomes, and when i connect with jo the plumber and list his service in my directory, i will also will probably be asked questions like. ( and remember i talikng with jo public ) why would i want to advertise on an internet directory, My answer to this question is simple, I see the internet directory as the untouched medium in many current advertising campaigns, that include TV, Radio and Papers the internet ( directory option ) is another source to extend these campaigns into and complete the picture. Now with that in mind i will also suggest to my plumber man as he is sure to ask, what directory ? why yours ? My final answer to this and your question is simply that like newspapers and other media you advertise in several not just one paper one radio station or one tv station and i would suggest to jo the plumber that he invest in several or as many directories as he saw fit. Where does he find these directories ? in my directory list.
How about you just send me the link to your directory list, and I refer to yours when he wants more directories to submit to.
bobby9101 when I just had my computer store and my webhosting site online on free sites (yahoo geocites etc..)as I am a reseller and no directories I used to go to the directory section just to see where I could submit my sites to now mind you this was way back when I first started
Before being a member of DP i used to find more directories to submit to through directories themselves. I also used directories earlier this year when i was searching for new hosting, it made sense to me as some have plenty of webhosts listed in one place. So although i dont use a directory to find something everyday (like a search engine) i do still use them when looking for a new service and researching.
i dont have a Web Directories category on the Blurb Directory what i do have is a Web Almanacs Category instead 99.99999% of directories call there cat Web Directories i thought it was time for something unique
Why not have a directories category but shut off submissions there. You can add those directories which may be of interest to your users.
I figure that if you are going to have a category, it should be open for submissions, no directory owner knows every single useful website, so we should always be trying to fill existing categories with better sites.
(speaking of Directories) I doubt you'll find those via submissions as they are not the ones looking to submit to directories.
