I sold Shopzilla.com a few years ago...

I am wondering how much I should have gotten for this.

I sold it several years go with an undeveloped oscommerce site. They were just buying the name.

As you probably know it is now a biz rate site.

    Thanks for your opinion.

Shopzilla.com with no content/visitors should not be worth much more than reg fee.

Yea it be worth probably $low to mid $xx. Its really catchy so it might even command a bit more to the right buyer.

But once you develop something . . . the value shoots through the roof.

Well you were just selling the domain + the oscommerce script with no real products or business.. I cannot estimated if it worth $100 or $100M...
Business.com or Software.com without content would sell for millions
Yahoo.com, YouTube.com without content would sell for just....$10!!!

Imagine if you first registered Yahoo.com or YouTube.com then the real Yahoo and YouTube would probably look for some other domain name...

We cannot really know how much a domain name or website is worth for others...

    My story
In 2002 I registered a domain but I never build my "perfect" website. Hosting was too expensive for me :p So after a year I let it expired. When in 2003 I check to see if someone else has registered the domain I found out that the website had full of original content by the new owner. Today it is a PR5 with thousands of content, backlinks e.t.c ...

Just if I knew that they wanted the domain name!!! :(

It all depends on the end user, if he is really desperate for that domain name he might even pay you $x,xxx

Right now it's a PR7 with an Alexa 2,192 so it's probably worth a few thousand at least.

But you don't know what the current owner(s) invested to get it there...

PR7 and Alexa 2,192. More like it's worth $xxx, xxx. You know they're getting a cut/referral fee for every sale that goes through that site. Obviously with an Alexa 2,192 and enough strong backlinks to get a PR7, they've got some good traffic. If they even net $2,000 a month, that makes the site worth at least $20,000 if not $30,000. Judging by the site though, I wouldn't be surprised if they're making $50,000 a month or more. I just wonder what their startup and operating costs are.

You're absolutely right there, of course, but I was referring to the domain only. Sorry if that was not clear.

In my opinon a domain name like shopzilla, without content, has not too much value...

you're going to drive yourself nuts if you think about the what if's. who ever you sold it to, had the great idea and resources to make it into what it is today.

Back then, reg fee. Now xx,xxx b/c hard work and a good idea paid off. Go to show that having the name is half the battle.
