Please support the people of Burma by signing the petition below and forwarding it onto all of your friends:

    http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_burma/tf.php?CLICK_TF_TRACK

    Hello all

I’m sure you are all aware of what is happening in Burma:

It is ruled by one of the most brutal military dictatorships in the world. For decades the Burmese regime has fought off pressure -- imprisoning elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and democracy activists, wiping out thousands of villages in the provinces, bringing miseries from forced labour to refugee camps.

Peaceful protesters numbered 20,000 on Saturday, 30,000 on Sunday, 100,000 today. This week, they could win a new life for their country. In the past, Burma's military rulers have massacred the demonstrators and crushed democracy. This time it can be different—but only if the world stands with the Burmese.

    Thank you

Is there anything we can do besides the online petition? I'm just not sure what impact an online petition would have.

Yeah they have plenty of oil, like every area of the world has plenty of oil. Thailand had plenty of oil and can produce much more than Burma but no one considers Thailand a rich oil resource country.

A homeless begger has plenty of money to buy a cup of coffee. But robbers don't bother beating the begger up for his change.....

Theres some more you can do here:

    http://www.bpf.org/html/whats_now/2007/burma_peace.html

You could also contact your local member of parliment/govenor/government official and tell them they should be doing more to support these people. That has to be worth one email at least.

There are some governments in the world which have been very silent on this matter, like Australia for example.

Can someone provide a synopsis for what's going on? My understanding is that Buddhist Monks are being oppressed by a military regime.

By akula's posts, I'm guessing the oppressors are islamic?

    latest news on it

To cut a long story short, the government of Burma are vicious and have been repressing the nation for 2 decades. The democratically elected leader has been under house arrest for 10 years. in 1988 the military killed 3000 pro democracy supports and its flashpoint now as to whether its going to happen again. Only differences in now the Buddhist monks are leading the protests and they are highly revered in Burma and the military didn’t want to mess with them. Its really is 50/50 as to what will happen next because the military has to been seen as strong and authoritative if they are to remain in power, which means someone’s going to get really hurt, some already have.

It will take a lot of resolve and pressure to dismantle the junta that has ruled for over 2 decades

Its very complex and very little external pressure from other countries is brought upon the junta to change the status quo

The struggle and deprivation of the people regretably has a lot longer to run

lanmonkey, thanks for the synopsis. I signed the petition. A symbolic gesture, I'm sure, but I hope peace will come to the Monks.

5 monks killed according to reports coming in
    http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/09/26/myanmar.crackdown/index.html
Unconfirmed opposition reports put the death toll at five. "A statement from the main Buddhist organization leading the demonstrations said five monks have been killed," Aye Chan Naing, chief editor of the Democratic Voice of Burma, told CNN from his office in Oslo, Norway.

Chinas support for the actions to the military government in Burma are very clear. A Chinese spokesperson was on the BBC news this morning and said “the most important thing is for the Burmese government to restore stability.”

I have written an email to the Chinese Embassy in the UK and US about this issue and if you would like to do the same you can contact them here:

    I have signed:

Hello, I thought you should know about this:

Burma is ruled by one of the most brutal military dictatorships in the world. For decades the Burmese regime has fought off pressure--imprisoning elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and democracy activists, wiping out thousands of villages, imposing forced labour, creating refugees-

But last Tuesday Buddhist monks and nuns, revered in Burma, began marching and chanting prayers. The protests spread as hundreds of thousands of ordinary people and public figures joined in, finding the hope they’d lost. Now they’re facing crackdown – so please, show your solidarity to this movement towards reconciliation and democracy and sign the emergency petition supporting the Burmese people -- it'll be delivered to United Nations Security Council members and international media all week:

    http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_burma/tf.php?CLICK_TF_TRACK

In the past, Burma's military rulers have massacred the demonstrators and crushed democracy. The world must stand with the Burmese people at this time, to show the military rulers that the world will not tolerate repression and violence.

Right now, global leaders are gathering in New York for the annual United Nations summit. In speeches, press interviews but also in real actions, we need them to show Burma's military junta that the global community is willing to act in solidarity with the protesters.

Show your solidarity to this movement for peace and democracy and sign the emergency petition supporting the Burmese people. It'll be delivered to UN Security Council members and the UN press corps all week:

    http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_burma/tf.php?CLICK_TF_TRACK

    Thank you for your help!

According to ko-htike's blog the military are using fire engines to clean the blood off the streets and have fired tear gas into a primary school.

On a positive note the UN petition mented in the first post has suprassed its 100,000 signature target and they have now upped it to 150,000. I am of the impression that the response has been greater than they expected. Thanks to all who signed it, history is being made.
