We've got a thread where people have voted on a poll for their Republican Candidate of choice. I thought it might be interesting to have a DP debate.

This is what I am proposing.

Each candidate who has 3 or more votes can offer 2 or more champions of position. This won't be a confrontational debate, strictly a debate based upon the positions of the candidates the different parties support. The champions must be able to articulate their candidates position clearly as we're going to leave diatribes and personal attacks to the experts (the real candidates).

I'll offer to mediate (neutral position) and run the debate, covering 7 major topics including

    War in Iraq
    Healthcare
    Abortion
    Immigration
    Gay Marriage
    Education
    Taxes

All member to member posts, personalized posts or posts out of order (to non-champion thread contributors) will be excluded and reprimanded by the mediator.

Of course other DPers can chime in, but only direct responses to the mediator on the issues will count. I'll post a clean summary thread when the debate has concluded.

If you're interested, please vote for your candidate if you have not already done so, and then post here if you would like to champion that Candidate's position. Meanwhile, I will firm up the rules and build a PM list to let each candidate's champions know when it is their turn to respond on an issue.

I think this would be a good idea, for presenting the different viewpoints of each of the candidates. There is a lot of misunderstanding and arguing about who supports what, and I think this would be a great way to highlight differences between candidates.

    Good post guerilla.

As a Brit I'm going to stay out of it as it has already long been decided that it will be Americas Fake Mayor (Giuliani) v Hill Dog Clinton but it will be interesting to see other peoples views.

I think that there are many more Republicans here in DP P&R than Democrats but it might be an idea to knock up one for the Democrats too some time in the near future.

I wish America had to choose between Ron Paul or Denis Kucinich.

There are some problems with the topics:

War in Iraq.. I'd change to War on Terror, better yet, National Security.
    Healthcare, good topic...
    Abortion, no one cares....
    Immigration, no one cares...
    Gay Marriage, no one cares...
    Education, good topic...
    Taxes, good topic...
I would add, Gas or just Energy itself

By "no one cares", I mean, these are non-issues.. They are not issues that are going to make or break a candidate for most Americans...

    So,

    National Security
    Healthcare
    Education
    Taxes
    Energy

    Anything else is useless...

Folks may have issue with the way the topics were worded, I was however seeking to find the common topics the GOPers post on their websites and answer in debates without leaning too heavily towards any particular candidate.

But unfortunately, no one has signed up so I don't see this happening. Looks like everyone is full of hot air, including the Ron Paul supporters. :p

Ron Paul supporters are showing up in the poll at least >.> It's just too early. I mean, the election is more than a year away, and Americans... are... lazy... *sips soda and eats more popcorn*

    #1 National Security

Based upon Ron Paul's positions on national security, he loses by default. It's really a shame too. If he wasn't such a pacifist, didn't perpetuate conspiracy theories, wasn't making is primary platform about "blaming America first," he'd otherwise be at least a second tier candidate right now.

do you really see a major improvment in national security in tha past few years. i thought that al qada is becoming stronger and iraq is really not working out so the conclusion i come up with is that the current policy is not really working to that end result you are looking for.

Ah yes.. If you do not, you are either blind or just being an ass...

No terrorist attacks on US soil since 9/11... The previous admin had both foreign and domestic terrorist attacks going on almost daily...

So which one are you? Blind, or...?
