What are the options for other people to promote your site online?

    -mail signature,
    -forum signature,
    -banner/link placement on their site/blog,
    -informing their friends via email,

    any other idea?

    Create an affiliate program.

Of course, it depends what your site is about...

    - vatars and gravatars
    - diggs, technorati tags, etc.
    - Posting about your site/product in forums they visit (ie, word of mouth/personal recommendation)
    - Create mini niche sites that point to your site as the topic authority

It really depends on how active/passive you want them to be. Sig links, banner links etc, are all easy things they can do that don't require much effort. If they're willing to put in more effort, then they can do anything you would do to market your site.

One great way is to come out with a useful online tool for your niche so that people will link to you :)

Link bait is the best way to go if you can do it right :)

Social Bookmarketing is another great way that most of us use.

We also created a myspace page for our site; since there are so many people on myspace, it is a great networking tool!

Although it was mentioned before, developing a network of affiliates is one of the more prosperous ventures I've launched. its one of those things that once you get the ball rolling, its hard to stop. the software I use allows affiliates to create seo friendly links. I advertise the affiliate program online and locally for people looking for part time work and its worked out well. my affiliates cut down on the time I spend marketing tremedously.
