Well, 8 clicks, 1 sale. Negative $3. So break even more or less. I'm gonna let it run for a while, maybe another 20-30 clicks and see. I generally don't like to spend more than $100 before making a decision, but $100 really isn't enough at $6/click to see if it's gonna work or not. The zillow ezads look interesting, but at .01c per impression, it's the same as $10/1000 that I'm bidding on google right now. Looks like it's for people who want to sell a house, but I'll look into it more tomorrow.

Since I only have a few keywords and I'm running mostly on the content network, I don't really need a sophisticated tracking program. I was using asrep.com to track everything, but about 2 months ago, it stopped tracking google traffic. Not sure why. It still tracks yahoo traffic just fine.

Basically I use the placement report in google to look at where the clicks are comming from. That in combination with the sid code in cj.com, I can get a feel for which ads are converting and cross reference with the domains sending clicks in the placement report. Not an exact science, but it's free and suits me just fine for now.

There are programs that look like they will laser target every ad/keyword/referrer. I think xtremeconversions is one? Anyway, I'm learning php now and think I can come up with my own little tracking script which I'll share here once I get it working. No promises, okay?

It looks like basically all I need to do is put a "?somevariable=somevalue" at the end of my landing page url. Then use "GET $_POST['somevariable']" along with some "GET SERVER VALUES" for the referring url. Then write those along with my corresponding sid code into an sql table and generate a report. That should show me which ad, referring url, and keyword is converting.

I'm sure there's plenty of good coders here in the forum where something like that would be a piece of cake.

Check my signature for tracking software. It's much better than xconversions and keyword radar, but it's also more expensive.Anyway it worth the money.

I have a possibly dumb question: why did you delete that ad (that turned out the be the best-performer) rather than just pausing it?

Yo Mr Rob nice thread, whats your take on longtail kws, use them much, if so do you have a tool to find them or you have other methods. I too run sites in a similar niche to yourself.

He keeps saying that for this campaign he hasn't bothered with longtail keywords because he's only using the content network.

    Adwords - paying for ad's

Adsense - displaying ad's on your site. Which when clicked give you money!

Ok, he doesn't use ppc for adwords, which in my mind leaves a major niche wideopen, anyway just because he doesn't target it, it doesn't mean he won't receive long tail traffic queries, hence the query.

He said earlier (like maybe two weeks ago) that he's only getting a tiny tiny amount of search traffic from Adwords Google search so that it's insignificant. Recently he said he might try Adwords search in the future, he's just concerned about the cpc with any keywords in this saturated niche.

He IS using Adwords, just only for the content network. The reason for this is, in such a competitive niche, placement on SERPs is too expensive. With the content network he can get reasonably priced clicks. That's the whole basic insight of this entire post: you can use the Adwords content network alone to get solid traffic in competitive niches.

In this niche, any keywords, however "long tail" are going to be expensive since it's so competitive the well's completely dry at this point.

What was the new policy? (I'm sure a lot of us are dreaming of getting into the program and replicating what Rob did.)

    Hi Parkaboy,

My impression on Lendingtree based on Rob's description is that it's not a program that's easy to get into. I could be wrong on that though.

For people just wanting to start out on PPC, I would suggest getting a less saturated niche then follow Rob's strategies in your campaign.

The fork in the road would be if the niche you chose would perform well on either the search network or the content network or both. That's part of the fun in PPC, discovering the possibilities yourself. ;)

    Just my 2¢.

Over the past few weeks LendingTree has removed specific lending rates/offers and messaging from its advertising mainly relating to option ARMs, MTA loans and mentions of “bad credit”. As a part of that change it is critical that all publishers in the LendingTree affiliate program be reminded that that only approved advertising in Commission Junction may be used in exchange for commissions. Sites in violation of the affiliate terms and conditions are subject to member termination and/or commission reversal.

I hope it was just a bad run of clicks i had ,
Lending tree 7 day epc is still very hi , so its most likey that nothing has change , I have a big campign ready to release tonight , but going to wait to see what rob has to say.
