i've got a web hosting site. keywords: "affordable web hosting", it's a new site. about 2-3 weeks. Google, yahoo and MSN are already got my site indexed. when checking on my back link on yahoo. It gave me about 260 links. One of my competitors using same keywords have 60 backlinks on yahoo and their website KD, is far less than my site. (you can use http://www.keyworddensity.com/ to check).

well, but my website is no where listed in "affordable web hosting" in google, yahoo or even msn.

    does anyone know why?

    thank you

Backlinks play a big role in SEO, they help build your websites profile. But there are hundreds of factors in actually ranking. And for starters, your website is waay to young to start seeing any major results!

I'd check how long your competitors website has been live for (using archive.org) but my guess is 1+ year(s).

about 3 - 4 years for my competitors. I actually checked the website age about 6 hours ago and using some powerful seo tools.

and how long does it take to see the result?

I would optimize and focus on Google and not worry about the other two.

For example i rank positions 6, 7 and 8 on the three search engines for "SEO Company" and i get 1 visit from Yahoo & MSN for every 100 from Google.

Just focus on backlinks/anchor text from various sources and methods and rankings will slowly come.

I agree that google gives more visitors but it is fact that yahoo and MSN has good conversion rate than google, so doing SEO for Yahoo and MSN is worth efforts.

Allow about 12 weeks to rank on yahoo normally
    2 - 3 weeks is not enough

That's generally true, "if" you get an equal number of visitors from both Yahoo & Google.

But look at it this way, even if Yahoo has double the conversion rate and you get 5% from Yahoo (5/100) and 2.5% from Google (2.5/100) convert, when Google send 20 times the traffic you 10 times more sales from Google every day of the week.

As you can see i have nearly identical rankings on the top 3 engines (Positions 6,7,8) but 90% of enquiries and sales come from Google because of the sheer numbers. So no matter how well Yahoo or MSN convert, im not going to risk 90% of my business by optimizing for them specifically.

However as you can see, i can optimize for all 3 so it's not a major concern but if i didn't know how to do this i'd definately still target Google.

    lol Sunday AM Translation:

It doesn't matter how well Yahoo traffic converts, the sheer numbers Google sends results in more sales.. So i optimize for what puts the most dollars in the bank, which is Google.

give them some more time. Yahoo and MSN always working slower than google. their algo are different but backlinks still important factors. get more back links and you will be fine.
