Domain age...

    Hi there,

I have just been recommended to this forum, and I think that was a great recommendation :D. I am not yet allowed to post live links, thus I've done some funny look-alikes in my post below.

I have a question about sandboxing. AFIK, the domain age goes into the equation. Questions is: is it actually the domain age or is the age of the hostname.

My current example: I own the domain gerhards.net since 1999. It had different content at www-dot-gerhards.net, but been consistent content-wise for at least a few years. This site has PR4 and is well-connected in its field.

Now, I have started a travel blog (I visit Florida for a space shuttle launch in October) at shuttlelaunch-dot-gerhards.net.

Question now: does this new *site* earn any benefits from that it is hosted inside a domain (gerhards.net), that is well-known for a couple of years?

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Rainer

i thought in the begining that you will ask if the domain is old is value more or how importan role does the old domains play in seo but this is more complicate.but for the first 2 things i mention above the answer is definitely yes for the third i am not sure.i think if the sub its revelant to the domain its gone to play a big role if not is going to elp but no much IMO

Subdomains are treated like stand-alone so basically, your subdomain is now seen as a completely new domain. I wouldn't have choosen that variant if I was you, I would have put the new "site" in a directory of the domain, like this: gerhards.net/shuttlelaunch/.

    No
    Fresh aging
    Fresh disadvantages with sub.
It is the links that have to age if you are targeting a competitive keyword

Ah, thanks for the feedback. Some more things I have seen meanwhile:

First of all, this is blogger, so I can not (or at least do not know how I could) place that site in a folder on www.gerhards.net.

Besides, I have noticed that adsense gets confused if I have very different topics on the same site. I noticed that when I started the space shuttle trip on my "usual" everyday blog at http://rgerhards.blogspot.com (this one is primary intended for open source project status and some nits - so optimizing it for advertising is not priority).

As soon as I started to use http://shuttlelaunch.gerhards.net, the adwords were immediately relevant (I guess based on the domain, maybe).

One other interesting fact is that the site is *currently* listed in google and found on searches. I guess my keywords are not really competitive.

I thought I let you know - and many thanks for the good answers.

    I would do both.
Start with your suggestion, but have just a page of context "aging" ready since in the long term it will be far better, say 18 months away

Ah, that's a good suggestion. I'll see that I create an article on www.gerhards.net, then I can also submit it to article directories. Will let you know when I have done.

Forgotten one side-note: As I am now aware of the aging problem, I've changed the new url to spacelaunch.gerhards.net - that allows me to continue to use it after 2010, when the space shuttle (and thus "shuttlelaunch" is history)...
