Well lets see. 1) Apache Web Server, IIS is probably gonna hit the ground soon. 2) Google, MS just can't seem to compete no matter how hard they try. 3) Mysql, SQL Server serves its purpose as a trial download. 4) Macromedia, Dreamweaver kinda has the edge over FrontPage. 5) Mozilla, Firefox does all my web hunting, IE is kinda good to make sure the site works on it. 6) Linux, kinda cruched the Windows Server line of software. Now if Ubuntu gets popular or somebody comes out a with graphical operating system, they might as well become a part of Google. MS Office I think on the contrary is going to stay strong.
They should stick with software and stay out of some of the other areas. Msn Search has been a disaster for years now.
Not sure what the purpose of this thread is. Let's look at what you say: Well, according to Netcraft, IIS has been gaining and may catch up to Apache in 2008. Check statistics @ http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2007/08/06/august_2007_web_server_survey.html Unless you have some knowledge that Netcraft doesn't, you are wrong in this statement. Let's look at statement 2: Well, again you must have data no one else has. Check out this link (which is one of many) which shows MSN/Live search usage increasing - http://blog.compete.com/2007/07/09/june-search-share-msn-live-google-yahoo-ask/ Statement 3 says: What does that even mean? SQL Server is used by enterprises who would not touch MySQL (even MySQL people acknowledge that it is not as powerful as MS SQL) Statement 4: Here's a newsflash, FrontPage is gone. Your statement is redundant. Microsoft now has Expression - http://www.microsoft.com/expression/ which is a decent suite (read the reviews) Statement 5: Um, you do realise most web users use IE, regardless of how good or bad it is. These users are the ones who come to your site and click on ads and buy stuff. I'll give one to you though as you did specify a personal habit not a generalisation. Statement 6: Please give some sources on this. I am working with large multi-million and multi-billion corporations right now that have Windows Servers and some who are already signed up for the Early Adopter program for Windows 2008. This statement has no merit at all. You've been PWND basically.
Ok, i got a few mins. Let me give u some facts. Going by your own references 1) U need to read it better. Your netcraft stats are based on Hostname usage. It's different from domain usage or domain count. Microsoft also gained over 3 million hostnames (a large part of which come from MySpace and Live Spaces, both of which use its Internet Information Server) I don't think that really counts. Popularity is by the actual number of sites, (domains which use Apache) and Apache still beats IIS by a long shot. I have a feeling it's gonna stay like that. 2) Again going by your data, although Compete is not a very reliable source. If u look at the chart (Going by the same information u gave me) From June-06 to June-07 Google jumped from 55.2 points to 62.7 points a gain of 7.5 points Microsoft jumped from 10.1 to 13.2 points a gain of 3.1 points Apparently they didn't take any of Google's Market share away. This is all going by the same research & information which you gave me. 3) And I'll tell you why. Trans Sql. Before late version 4, Mysql did'nt offer transaction support. And now it does, along with Mysql Enterprise which uses Innobase from Oracle and has Berkeley DB table support. Situation is this. My roomates job in Chicago sent him to Bangalore India (A global Silicon Valley)for a month to overlook a project. He comes back and says, Adnan, Microsoft is literally passing out Windows products to prevent Linux & Mysql from coming into India. Here's Mysql's market share graphs http://www.mysql.com/why-mysql/marketshare/ 4) If it was a hopping Product it wouldn't be pulled off the shelf would it? I mean I don't see Windows being renamed to Doors or Frames. Statement 6: And that's pretty much the prime target for Microsoft server products. GSA, government and corporations basically because Microsoft is a public company. The've been using them ever since, and it's more of a political (repor based) decision then technical. I'm gonna let you swallow what I wrote so far and debunk your other points at a later time. what's PWND btw
3) Mysql, SQL Server serves its purpose as a trial download. >> All my sites run on MySQL. But, if MySQL continues to grow at it's present pace and MSSQL Server stops any development MySQL may catch MsSQL in 5-10 years. BTW, I am a Oracle DBA and even Oracle can not match MS SQL in native ETL Support.
I'm not too much into this data warehousing, but don't most people use Sap? I think Mysql has ETL modules coming out in the near future. One big problem sql server has is it runs on Windows. While there is Linux Hp/ux Solaris . .. .... So users don't really get their freedom of operating systems unless microsft changed sql server. Right now Mysql has close to 35% of the market share which is not bad and I see it growing at a fast pace. A cousin of mine who runs his own Oracle Consulting company tell me that the work they charge from clients which costs close to $300K costs less then $20K if they were on Mysql. I see tremendous growth for Mysql Enterprise
Sorry, but with your answer you made it clear you have no idea what ETL is. For ETL people use Informatica, Data Stage, DMX Express etc and NOT SAP. SAP is a ERP software. I am not saying MySQL is bad but reality is I will not choose it over MS SQLSERVER for enterprise databases. MS SQL just offers much more for bigger databases like multi-way replication, native server mirroring and tons of management tools. -Princy
Well I never said i knew what etl is and I'm not even worried bout it. Why not? U can have 16TB tables on Mysql running Solaris? I've heard of success stories of entities using Mysql over 100 boxes. It has a native interface where you can write native code and I bet you it'll benchmark pretty close to Sql Server. Plus, what is Sql Server, like $10,000 p/box vs, Mysql $500 p/box 100 x 100,000 = $10 million for a database. Compare those costs with Mysql.
It's so funny that you looked at the market share and left behind the query volume which I hope you know what it means .. msn live 67% while google 0.3% If you can't crunch the numbers then look at the graph below in the that same page and you will see the steep jump of msn live query volume .. and hey look at this , I think it will help you understand pwnd have a nice day
I would read that graph again if I were u. The 67% your talking about is a Monthly Change. Lets look at the Yearly column. Google up 29% MSN Live up 48% But wait. Lets read this I mean what, Microsoft now has it's own Search Games. What do people play, Hide 'n Seek And they can win money too while playing.
and who is overtaking microsoft in terms of desktop os, office software, etc. ? and... i don't agree with the facts in the first post by the way...
I'm not really against Microsoft and agree that they have contributed tremendously into the computer era with their products. But there's alot of negativity around for Microsoft, whether you accept it or deny it. To the point, that professors in our school were even criticizing Microsoft. I think this may have to do with rumors around that the Windows interface was originally developed by Apple and for some reason Microsoft ended up reaping the profits. I don't know if there is much truth in that statement but word is out on the streets. One thing I do know and remember very well is how Microsoft literally slaughtered Netscape. I mean they brought that company down to it's knees, begging for mercy after they had invested everything they had into Netscape 1. I think it was close to what, a Billion Dollars maybe? They said that were giving away IE for free while Netscape couldn't do that. Well IE was never for free. It's cost was built right into Windows 95 and u paid for it thinking that it was free. My brother whose job made it easier to follow the subject told me that the judges are fining Microsoft several Million dollars per day until further hearings during the Microsoft lawsuit. You either pay the fine, or take IE out. Well Microsoft said, we've got money, we'll pay the 1 Billion dollar a year fine, jack up the cost of Windows a few dollars and get rid of Netscape. What a plan, what a business man Gates was. Of course Netscape fell to the ground. Torn to pieces. They couldn't sustain the huge financial strength of Microsoft. And I bet you Microsoft enjoyed that moment like there was no tomorrow. I mean they could have let Netscape Co-Exist. It was a very good product and outperformed IE in every aspect for a few years. IMO this was Microsoft's biggest mistake and this is going to rip that company apart. You can't take back time and no matter what they do, they will have to live with this. I think alot of people would like to see Microsoft suffer the way they made Netscape suffer and that's the reason behind all this anti Microsoft stuff. See history sort of has a way of coming back and haunting u in the xxx. And believe it or not, alot of these open source softwares are putting big dents in Microsoft's income. At one time, the computer user was pretty much dependent on Microsoft. Now, it's just an option. Another thing I see is that Microsoft can't seem to compete with Google which is growing so fast. I mean god knows, Microsoft IMO is giving it all it has but it just can't even budge Google. And Google has a very prestigious reputation in the computer world and beyond, so I forsee Google as a potential threat to Microsoft's well being.
Right, now just before I say this I don't want people to be offended, but this thread although being an arguement/debate, I don't think it should be closed. I have learnt quite a lot . Please continue...
