Enough with the 'million dollar' sites!

Million Dollar Homepage - Fair enough, it was a new idea.

Million Dollar Wiki - It's just a collection of spam, but it's getting publicity, so it evens out.

Million Dollar Dig (milliondollardig.com) - Are you serious?

It's a ripoff of the MDW in that you pay $100 for a page. But their 'selling point' is that you get a totally blank page that you can use for whatever you want.

Um... why the heck would anyone want that? You can get a page on Myspace for free and myspace has tons of traffic. This million$dig place has none.

Not only did they waste their time building this site, they wasted the time of everyone who is unfortunate enough to come across it.

Am I missing something or am I right that million$dig is completely worthless?

I share your hate for these sites.
I won't click on anything which has the words 'million' and 'dollar' in the URL.
They just rip off the original one, which wasn't even a good idea in the first place (just when we start to discover the efficiency and effectiveness of targetted advertising on the internet and suddenly this idea drags us back a decade).

Move on people, million dollar is dead and buried. Stop milking her.

The orignal one bought loads of traffic for advertiser's. so it can't be a rip off anyway.

The success of milliondollarwiki is only that it's new and unique which brings publicity. but 100$ is too much ;)

I have to agree completely with this. Anything but an original site in my own opinion is pointless.

The original was only successful because goldenpalace.com got in on it. Then the media took notice and every "me too" person threw money at it.

I honestly can't see any of the reinventions of the concept bringing that kind of traffic in.

I didn't say the original was a rip off, I said it wasn't a very good idea for the amount of success it got. Being popular brings more popularity though. It's not a science, although having a media guru on board from the initial stages helped.
I paid $100 for an advertising spot which didn't bring much traffic at all (100% untargetted, which means no sales) and now just bombards me with spam everyday through people linking me to their shitty million dollar sites as they have access to the email list of people who purchased spots - that's why it's not the best of advertising ideas.

lol wen I was first got into making money online I went through a Million Dollar phase.

I bought one off eBay for $80... wat a waste now lol :D

Some people can still make money off these pages by selling them to newbies (like I was) on eBay.

Come up with a new version of it to sell off to those newbies and anyone could strike it rich. Oh and if you do that you wont have to worry about it ever becoming popular with normal ppl cos none of the ones u sell will ever be successful LOL :p

Anywho, thought I add this to the thread.... Maybe this guy owns this website :p I know he didnt link to it but hey... iv seen poorer attempts at promotion.

    :D

    Cheers,
    Sam.

Yeah, they need to find something more original.

I remember the guy who rescued a rabbit and was threatening to eat it if people didn't pay him to keep it alive. <sigh>

Then there was the guy who was selling pixels on a million pixel page. Clever!

There was the guy who kept upping his trades to people, starting with a big paperclip and working his way up to a house somewhere in Canada. That worked out well!

It makes me really sad because about 5 months ago I thought to myself "I should make a page that lets you buy any word you want, and you own the page for that word. I'd only charge $5 and let people resell or rent their pages out! .. Nah nobody would do that."
How wrong was I? Haha, oh well. I'd feel like a douche if I did do it anyway.

I'm totally sick of these sites. For a long time I was in the shadow of these stupid stories.

In my religion (Islam) earning money without working is a sin; I believe in other religons it's also that way. Or let's look from a broader perspective, in ethical way, you may be an atheist or agnostic whatever, you'll accept, earning without working is not a good thing. I try to tell myself: Work: Work hard, work efficient, work ethically.

Yes some earn more, some earn less. It depends on the quality of your work. How you use technology as a tool. Depends on how you use your brain as a tool.

Think of Facebook: It was spread with no marketing. But it's really a common-sense work. Mark knows how to use web2.0 concepts and know
what user may want from a community and don't want.

Up to Facebook era, social networking was just a sub branch of "Friendship site"s, websites were collecting emails to sell and female picture to take to their Showcase and advertisement. Women hate this. Facebook doesn't open with big sexy women images and kissing couples. In Facebook everyone writes their real names. In Facebook, you're not searched, as long as you don't want.

To run such a system may seem simple. In a week someone can code a clone of Facebook. Who'll visit when Facebook is there?

For my point of view, problems of Internet are painful. There is a great need for registering sites with one-click system. Users do not want to sign up all sites continuosly, there should be a central system. I hope GMAIL will open a gateway to login from GMAIL. This can let internet sector JUMP conceptually overnight.

    Second:
Advertisement sector is sick. They get most of the earnings. Think adsense. Their ads are ugly. I hate Adsense in my site. There should be better text based services around, working for publishers.

    Third:
Monopolies can work illegal. In terms of Google TOS, Youtube should not publish Adsense?? It is full of illegal videos. illegal copyright problem videos. Google can use the content of New York Times and all newspapers around the globe which spend millions of dollars to gather information. Google can do this. If you do the same, Google will ban you from Adsense suggesting: "hey! be no devil". OK.

Current status of Internet is not that bright. Ideas are commercial. Values are commercial. Few about networking. Few about "service".

Current status of network with 1 billion visitors is nothing more than self-guard of Monopolies. Google, Yahoo and MSN, they buy sites from top 100 by the pressure from Stock Markets, they've become the slaves of their power, so we are. Google is very different from it's 2004-2005 performance. It's a commercial power now.

How can they be monopolies if they are sharing the same market?

Have you ever heard of OpenID? Search it, learn about it and implement it. If you think it's such a big problem become part of the solution :)

Will we ever see the end of them just like we won't see the end to new proxy sites, myspace sites, and arcade sites?

I also think on the same lines as you do. However, I heard that google is going to change their page rank system and change to something else and these systems would come handy at that time. I am not sure though and am looking for more information on this.
