sup guys thanks for all your help on DP members. Does anyone know what alexa ratings have to do with seo as far as google is concerned. I really don't see any listing on how alexa rating is that important. I'm sure im missing something any help would be great.
I don't think anyone believes that Alexa's data is used by Google to determine its search results. It would make no sense for Google to use it since Alexa's data is wildly flawed from a methodological perspective. Unreliable data has no place in what tries to be a fact-based algorithm Have I misunderstood your question?
It isn't. Alexa's good for two things - and Jack left town. Simply put, Alexa relies on a toolbar - which in this case is a piece of spyware - that tracks where you go online, and then aggregates all that data into a single source. Hardly the most reliable or accurate when you think about it since it relies entirely on how many people have their spyware installed on their computers for data collection.
thanks dan but i still don't know why alexa is important. People on the DP forums says stuff like "improve your alexa ratings" etc. Why is that so i still don't know =/
If you have a higher Alexa rank it usually means you have higher traffic and higher traffic is ALWAYS good. Other that that, Alexa is near useless.
Only higher traffic among those that have their stupid spyware installed. Alexa is just useless - period, and those who claim that you need to improve your Alexa ranking should be ignored. The only thing that Alexa is even remotely useful for is finding out how much your site may be worth based on the traffic "impressions" recorded by the site based on how many people have their crapware installed on their computers that are visiting your site - and that's only relevant to advertisers and potential buyers. Other than that, I don't buy into the school of thought that Alexa serves any real purpose. It's only purpose really is to spy on people.
How come? What if your alexa ranking is just manipulated and you acquire higher ranking? Do you think it will be substantial proof that you can have higher traffic? SERPs rule....
Alexa rankings are considered important by some sites like payperpost, reviewme and also by some ad networks to determine how much would you be paid for writing a review or displaying ads, etc. Hence people keep on saying 'improve your alexa rating'.
o ok. Thanks for all your help guys. It sounds like alexa is useless to me. LOL but an indirect question i wanted to find out the answer to is more hits on your site = higher ranking on alexa site = Site becomes popular on keywords = google pageranks your site up higher? any thoughts on that? I've heard with more uniques hitting your site it googles algorithm views it as a popularity contest.
Having higher traffic doesn't necessarily mean higher search engine rankings. Your search engine rankings are based a lot on the backlinks pointing to your website and higher traffic increases the probability of websites link to you. So higher traffic is slightly related to search engine rankings but not directly related.
thanks live. so your saying it has some weight in SEO i guess im asking you this primarily to see if purchassing 50k useless uniques help in seo =]
Useless won't help since none of the useless visitors will post a link to your website on another website. Although if you got 50k visitors from Digg.com, some of the people will post a link to your website.
alexa is just a tool to know your ranking across the world but it has got nothing to do with helping in getting better ranking in google....
Alexa only records the traffic by those who have their spyware (I mean toolbar) installed on their comptuers. It's hardly an accurate indicator of actual traffic (for example, how can 456 Berea Street get more traffic than CNN? - it can't).
Alexa just show the popularity of your site not really for SEO purpose. it's more likely for traffic purpose.
What they should be saying is INCREASE YOUR TRAFFIC. Telling people to increase their Alexa ranking is like telling people to get Microsoft Excelled when you actually are telling them to get organized.
