I still don't get it. Is is so hard to answer my question? Don't we have to get to the root of this issue? Where does the idea of the burka come from? I am sure no sane woman woke up one day and decided: hey the ninjas look cool? maybe we should copy that style? So where is the inspiration for the burka coming from? Because I understand shari'a and burka are closely related. So I don't get them mixed up, please explain for me: It was a SIMPLE question. I am a simple dude, so explain in SIMPLE terms please: Where in the world they get shari'a law from? What nice book inspires shari'a law? Same book that teaches Jihad?

I am asking because I seem to keep on getting it wrong. On one hand I was told I don't get the meaning of burka, Jihad, and shari'a, and yet all these are inspired by what book? Just to make sure, please clarify these points for me.

Man, you missed a great opportunity to explain to me (an infidel) about the great connection between your great book the Quran and the burka. Because I keep getting it wrong, because of the wrong mis-interpretation. Maybe the Quran was so ahead of its time it was ninja it was refering to when it meant who should wear the burka. Oh well...another misinterpretation, or maybe not.

    this is really very simple.
men treat woman as objects in most religions, preaching chastity and virtue, modesty and homeliness, in order to keep women in their place.
this clothing is serving the same purpose. of course the men would argue that it is for the woman's sake, hiding her attributes so that men don't lust after her or rape her in the street.
my advice to men who argue this is that in this case the problem obviously doesn't lie with the women, but with the men, who really need some form of castration if they cannot pass a woman dressed normally in the street without wishing to sexually attack her.
of course women are as much to blame for voluntarily wearing this ridiculous garb, and they will argue that it is their choice, not forced upon them by the men in their family. but if you are indoctrinated by religion from birth of course you will do something like this believing it to be your choice, because you know no different.

hijab is not the same as burkha. You cant compare the two. Burkha is a big abuse on woman, hijab is not a big abuse.

I also wonder why muslims use burkha ? What year was the burkha introduced? Is there any other religious group in the middle east that use burkha?

in bertrand russell's 'unpopular essays' he writes of a nun who bathes fully clothed so that presumable god may not see her. however, seeing as god is omnipresent and can see everything bertrand questions the nun's actions and those of religion as a whole.

Not sure... but because the nun also wear the similar cloth, so I presume it was there long before Islam, even maybe long before Christian.

I think it a middle east traditional cloth for woman, it's cultural not religious.
Only in afganistan that woman wear burka, even in iran they wear only hijab - cmiiw- where woman still can show their beautiful faces.

No, they can't but it's a choice they make.

The question is do all muslim women choose to wear the hijab/burqa?

Hijab/Burka is not hurdle in women freedom. In Pakistan there are hundreds and thousands of women who are doctor, teachers, Jet Pilots, Bankers, marketing managers..... and most of them wear Hijab/Burka.

Because a lot of people have their own distorted definition of "equality"...

Just as blacks couldn't drink from white water fountains, gays can't marry, and scooter libby didn't serve a day in jail after being convicted of perjury and obstruction...

Hijab and Burka is two VERY different things.
Dont forget that when the taliban lost its power in afghanistan a lot of woman abandoned the burka so it is obviously a bad thing for those. If it was a good thing they would have continued using it, but they did not, they stopped using it as soon as they was not forced anymore. I would say that in 9 of 10 womans use the burkha because of force.

First of all, the jokers in this thread need not be paid attention to. They know who they are.

To those with sincere questions looking for honest answers, clear your mind of the media's meaning of the burqa (ex: women are oppressed).. and read what a Muslim has to say.

The burqa is not an Islamic 'invention'.. it was used by the Greeks, Byzantine Christians, Persians, Indians and others. It was primarliy used by high status women... like the Assyrian kings that ordered women to veil except the prostitutes and slaves.

It was not until the SECOND Islamic century that the burqa started appearing.
The Islamic ruling on 'covering up' is clearly stated in the Quran:

“O Prophet! Tell your wives and daughters and believing women that they should cast their outer garments over their persons. That is most convenient that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful”. (Surah al-Ahzab, 59).

The MAJORITY of Muslims believe that a women should cover up her head, bosoms, and they should wear loose clothing so not to reveal shape of the body. Which basically what's called the HIJAB.

Also, it's same for MEN, not to wear tight fitting clothes so not to reveal the shape of body.

For those who say, "it's not their choice" who are you to say that? Are you some kind of scholar? Do you not see how the system controls how you dress, think, say and act? The system we live in constantly bombards us with the message of looking like a certain figure. Do you not think that these women in the west are without freedom of choice? You will understand what I mean by reading an article written by an ex-model that converted to Islam. Click Why I Shed my Bikini for Niqab (hijab)

Yes this is 100% correct. The woman in the west is also a slave to dressing pressure, just like the woman wearing burkha.

For me it is a big mystery why the men dont have to wear a burqa, its only the woman. If the same rules apply to both men and woman, men also have to wear burqa.

And just for the record, I never said that the burqa is an islamic clothing. I am not interested in discussing religion, I am discussing the burqa.
