How long should it take, 1st position keyword

How long would it take you to get in the first position on a phrase, with competition with only say 200 backlinks. I have 1200 currently so how hard should it be for me to take their positions with a well written article? a month, weeks, longer?

You will need to provide a URL for both websites if you want some meaningful response. You can't accurately speculate on time tables with such an open ended question. With that said I would be willing to give you a "guesstimate".

No one can predict the position that you can get unless someone hacked the google algo.

It's a two word keyword with apprx. 100 searches a day, competition has backlinks of say 200-500 range for the top 10. Site ages are old, sub 2000 level. My site is 1 month old. Their websites are not optimized to be ranked #1 and are old style websites.
I wanted to know because, should I target these keywords for the 100 visitors or will it just take to long and it's not worth the work for them, rather should I target a keyword with say over 500 search per day with newer pages and more backlinks.

    Depends on several things
1- If your domain includes the keyword
    2- The number of backlinks
3- The quality of backlinks "related, PR"
4- The quality of the content
If you do the best of the above, your position will be the first in short time

My site went from #465 to #5 for my three-word phrase since the month began. It can happen very fast IF your links are anchor-targeted.
Also important: your <title> tag, and keyword occurrance on page. 4-5 repetitions in the body, boded or italicized.
Be aware that changing your title tag may cause you to be temporarily deindexed.

Thats the kind of answer I'm looking for. Tomorrow I'll write an article for a small keyword and I'll say how long it takes to get to #1 for it.

Depend on your keywords. For a keyword that have low competitions, you easily dominate this in 3 - 7 days by using 1 higher PR of a backlink.

Weak PR3-Pr0 from old linking websites, numbers in the low hundreds some just more then 100. Sites have been up for a while, some before 2000. Mines fresh, made this year.
    I need to sleep.

The some before 2000 could prove to be difficult to topple.

If the other links are weak and yours are strong ( Not in Number, in quality), then it shouldn't be too difficult to do it. Again this is an estimation...without the keyword we are simply shooting in the dark, and hoping that it will hit the target.....

I agree with dal...without the urls its impossible to comment. You may want to check one thing though. If the competition has only 200 backlinks are they sub-domains or homepages? If they are sub-domains you may find that a check on the back-links to their entire site will produce a better indication of the number of backlinks required. Although you really need to look in more depth at the quality of the backlinks rather than the number.
If there is a homepage in the top ten...use it as a marker. Analyse the backlinks...try to get as many links from the same pages as the highest quality backlinks coming into it and you should start to head in the right direction.

whats your current ranking and besides the backlinks your competition for the keyword as well as the popularity of the keyword also counts in the same...

Time can not be predicated. If you have done SEO and link building then it might take 2-9 months.
