Hello people, I am trying for more than 7 month to get in DMOZ, but no luck. I think my site, Free Software Downloads is worth looking at and there many other listed there which I think are not better than mine. I really don't get it. I submitted the site, waited 3 month, nothing. Sent an email to editor of that category, ... nothing. Submitted again and waited, ... nothing, ... How can I get there?
I think I am among the few lucky ones, who submitted 3 different sites in DMOZ, in 3 totally different categories, and got them indexed in ~2 weeks.
I just think you are unlucky. Not all are so unlucky. I just found the following MFA site. http://www.mostwanted.org/ listed in http://www.dmoz.org/Society/Crime/Criminals/ I wonder how on earth this site got accepted there.
First you go to archive.org to see how it looked before. After all, for all we know, this site was legit and was put into DMOZ, domain expired and someone MFA's it - http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.mostwanted.org
So how can I improve my luck guys? Really. I think the category editor won't accept me. I emailed him after 3 motnhs, ... what should I do?
In case you missed the advice given already - you've submitted it, now forget about it and go work on your website. Re-submitting and sending emails is you wasting time when you could be working on your site.
Why didn't you just follow the guidelines and wait for ages like everyone else? I'm not going to bother checking your site, I'm willing to bet it's black listed for spamming an editor's email... Submit & Forget Forget 2 Submit Now you'll likely need to wait even longer.
Wow.. that is quick. The site got delisted so quickely. But, I am sure Google will keep the evidence public little longer. http://www.google.com/Top/Society/Crime/Criminals/
Listen to the advice given here, don't keep re-submitting and many/most editors do not feel they want to reply to people asking about the sites they have submitted. RZ used to do look ups, but have now stopped and mostly editors will not do them either. You probably will not get blacklisted, but you are wasting your time trying to badger an editor into looking at your site, respond to one badgering and the posts on here would be "Want to get into DMOZ? Then badger an editor and s/he will respond" then all we would be doing is spending editing time dealing with badgering emails. So very often we don't reply and certainly don't respond to a badgering email by dealing with the site any earlier than if the email had never been sent.
I think that it depends on whether there is an editor specific to the section you are submitting. So in some sections, there is no editor, so editors looking at upper categories will therefore have to see your submissions. But they don't usually have time for that!
Correct, . I edit at the Regional/US level which gives me editing permissions in all 50 states and every city, county, region, and metro area, and all of the subcategories in each of them. That's a lot of territory to cover and tens of thousands of site suggestions. Editors with higher privleges, like editall and meta editors have much more to deal with, and many more responsibilities, knowledge, and experience. There are also many editors who edit in just one small category, and they are limited to that one category, which is where we all start. Each and every editor, no matter what their level, has an equal say, and are equally as important. I refer to myself as a minor editor, in the grand scheme of things, but there are no minor editors in reality.
I am beginning to think that my category editor (nocturnal) just doesn't want to add my site. There are many junk sites listed in those categories, but after an year my site, which is a good one, it is not. So I think this is not a fair game.
The more likely reason is it just hasn't been looked at yet, . Many volunteer editors deal with large areas of the Directory and everything beneath them, and many of us have multiple categories that we work in. For instance, I edit in everything within the United States, but that's not where I'm currently working. I'm reviewing hundreds of sites in a Fishing Charters & Guides category that lists sites from all over the world, by country. Once I polish those off, I'll go back to editing the 50 states within the US. Some of those sites were submitted the day before, and a lot of them were submitted (suggested) last May, in the spring. I don't edit by date of submission, so many very recent submissions get listed at the same time that older ones get listed. This is a category that's been neglected for awhile because no editor had the time or interest to edit there. I've recently taken it on to help one of our administrators who is reorganizing it, and he sure works a lot harder than I have been. It's hard to keep up with him, I'm way behind. Added - Administrators and meta editors are some of the hardest working editors in the Directory. The fact that an Administrator and a very minor editor like myself are working together on a project, should give you an indication of how things really are in the Directory.
