Not sure if this was posted before or not. If it was Sorry for the double post. I know there are people who defend the NYTimes as not being a leftists newspaper but it must be really hard to do so after this recent news.

    No surprise there at all.

Did they cover their ass by giving Guiliani a similar discounted ad? He said he was going to try.

Reminds me of an old thread I started a while back: Can we question their patriotism now? That thread alone had far more reaction than anything I've seen out of the left here.

One thing is for sure...lefties have no qualms about projecting their own shortcoming onto others.

Not sure if they did or not, I know he requested it, which is how I came across the information.

My wife and I are sitting here having a laugh over them right now.

We received snail mail "spam" from them today. Purple border and just under it, it begins with "Explore something new every week. Reply now and enjoy everything the New York Times has to offer -- and save 50%."

Rather than toss it in the trash, we're going to use the prepaid envelope that will cost them money and send it back to them, with a print out of this cartoon:

giuiliani did get the same discount.

I don't think the NYT has really done anything wrong here, besides actually publishing the ad. Discounting ad rates is very common for newspapers and tv. If you have a longterm contract with the NYT - which I'm sure Soros does - then he could very well get good discounts off their published rates - which is how they base the "discount" - no one pays the published rates. It's just a number to make you feel good when they give you 20% off or whatever. Wow, I saved us $20,000 !

Media buying companies couldn't exist if it weren't for this - small businesses get lot of exposure on tv/print by contacting a media buying company who gets tremendous discounts, then allowing small companies to buy small parts of those ad spots.

I think the real issue is that no one would be surprised if the New York Times ran the Betray Us ad on the front page. Leaning toward the extreme left is what they do. They are every bit as extreme as George Soros' MoveOn.org.

Of course a newspaper is going to discount ad prices. How else can they compete with the internet (a far better advertising format)?

At least a few intelligent posters bothered to actually explain how the print media advertising industry works.

Getting sick of the bunch of knee jerk neo-cons complaining about the liberal media influence. Neo-cons want to be liberals, just like gays who try to live a straight lifestyle. Living a lie.

First off no one would be complaining if it was 20% but its not they got a 64% discount and I doubt there even that big of a advertiser with the New York Times.
