Wow, that's quite a price. I guess some of these clubs need a lesson in economics, empty seats indicates pricing is not properly set on the supply and demand curves.

I attended a baseball game in Anaheim a couple of weeks ago. We had seats for $28 that were six rows from the field in left field and there were over 40,000 in attendance. This was one 80 home games and a game between Anaheim and Texas would maybe be something like a game between Liverpool and Aston Villa. I wouldn't have paid $80 for a seat.

Come on people *claps hands* this thread has gone off-topic! This is supposed to be a discussion as to why people who've been influenced by the snobby English upper class call football 'soccer' whereas the rest of the world (including blue-collar Brits) calls it 'football' in whatever language they speak.

Let's leave all the 'my sport is better than yours!' for another thread!

Anyway Rugby League is by common consent reckoned to be the hardest sport. Not that you'll find me admitting it mind ...

Sorry I'm a bit late in joining in, but if the sport's ruling body is called FIFA then the sport is called Football.

    'nuff said

Smartes post I've read all month ;)

But, by following the "american football" pattern, "soccer" should be called "rest of the world handball" :D

Nah, we like to be reminded that North Americans have no idea what football really is, so let's leave it as it is, aye? ;)

It is strange logic since this is a forum and not America. But still by his logic when talking in digitalpoint we should assume everybody is American and everybody should talk in American English.
So i guess we should start calling trainers 'sneakers' maths 'math' etc when in tbarrs presence.

Oh we know what association football is, our girls are gunning for their 3rd World Cup and 5th top 3 finish in the last 16 years. And soccer is growing here with many of the boys not big enough, strong enough or fast enough for football turning to soccer and now we have an influx from Latin America that we who support girls club soccer are now subsidizing boys who's fathers are die hard Cruz Azul and Tigres fans. Don't be surprised if American boys named Sanchez, Rodriquez, Washington, and Harrison are hoisting the cup before England is. :D

You never know maybe they actually want to play football rather than american football? It might not be down to their physical strength but they, like the rest of the world might think its a better sport?

They are both great sports, but I hate this attitude: "American football is for the big guys and r.o.t.w. football is for the weaker and girls". At least if they had the same equipment as rugby players...

Is rice a better food than prime rib of beef or your favorite Italian or Thai or French dish? Rice is much more popular than any other food, does that make it the best? In most of the world the choice is rice or starvation and soccer or no sport.

Popular can't be equated to best.

So you think the majority of places were football is popular there are no other popular sports so people just have to watch/play it? If so thats clearly bullshit.

Most countries in the world (there are over 200 countries) don't have organized or professional leagues and if they do it's soccer and no other option. Have you heard about the number three sport league in the Sudan, Camerroon, Bulgaria, Uruguay, or Iraq? Me neither.

Hey I'd be willing to use the clumsy term "American football" (apologies to my friends in Canada) if you were to use the term my grandparents used for the game they played back home, soccer. Sound like a fair deal?

The huge majority of football fans come from countries with lots of other choices.
It doesnt matter what term you use, all im saying is whilst in the UK im not going to talk as an American, especially not on a multi national forum were Americans are the minority. So its football and American football from me, maybe Canadians invented American football, but sure even they realized it was a crap sport and only the Americans obsess over it, therefore you take the blame for playing it..

I agree with you totally, tbarr, you've got a population of more than six times our little island, so mathematics/statistics should be on your side eventually. Washington and Harrison are English names anyway ;)

So once you guys realise football's more than just a sport these days, like the Glazers at Man Utd and Liverpool's new owners have done and like the way LA Galaxy is going, you'll be turning football into a business and employing as many mercenaries as will green card play for you, aye? ;)

Seriously mate, you say tomato and I say tomato, it's all the same thing, it's all football :)

You say there are choices but didn't mention any. I see the cricket highlights from the top league in the UK on Sky Sports, the stands are empty. Maybe the options are rugby and basketball, I am not aware of leagues that are on the level of the EPL, maybe you can fill me in.

    "crap sport"?

    Which sport has:
    • Men falling down crying and popping back up when a little yellow card is held up.
    • A horrific offense....oooops....offsides rule with two referees standing around with almost nothing else to do waiting to throw up their little flag. See ice hockey for a good offsides rule that can't be gamed.
    • 180 offensive attacks per game with 175 to 180 failed attacks.
    • "this space for rent" jerseys with the sellers of booze, gambling and Bimbo bread renting those spaces
    • Little or no involvement of the coach during the game.
    • A goal big enough to park a huge SUV in but world class men (well at least EPL) overshoot it by 10 meters more often then they score.
    • A penalty kick which is not so much a skill but one man's guess against another.
American football is much more complex than soccer, if you grew up with both you would understand this. I enjoy soccer but find it quite lulling with the ball just going back and forth, come back an hour later it's still nil-nil. In football, a drive is often sustained with schemes changing depending on location on the field, time left in the game, position of ball relative to a first down, what down it is, what type of plays have been working, what defenses are presented, what players are in or out for that play, and on and on.

Players don't dive and cry. In a pressure situation, the kicker will more often than not make a 40 or 50 yard kick and not miss by 10 meters.

BTW, my favorite EPL teams are 32red.com and Carlsberg beer and my favorite NFL teams are the Detroit "this space not for rent" Lions and San Diego "we make enough on tickets, parking, souvenirs, stadium food and drink, licensing, and TV revenue" Chargers. Oh and my favorite Mexican team is the Bimbo one.
