Whats the best way to market a forum, where its not just pagerank, but the poplurarity (amount of posters and users) counts more?

    Thanks,

    Ben

AdWords. Get visitors. Encourage them to post. Reward frequent posters. Reward members. Make your forum useful ie. Not a "general chat" forum.

Post in similar forums, or even different forums which may have the same target group. For example, when I was promoting a sports forum, I posted in a car-enthusiast forum, which got me a good number of new members just from a link in my signature.

You find out, let me know. I'll be very interested because I'm trying to promote a sport/handicapping forum.

The best way to market a forum is to give incentives for quality posts done by members. The forum points and its market system really helps.

Get some good paid posters who will create interesting topics. This will encourage visitors to register and post.

    Might sound cliched but,

    1. Hire some knowledgeable posters.
    2. Try advertising through sig links.
    3. Buy links on similar blogs.
    4. Advertise through the social bookmarking sites.
    5. Keep improving ! All the best.

First thing is to hire some good forum posters.
Forum without interesting content is not going to grow even if you drive traffic to it.

Market it through relevant forums and organize some contest/referral program ,also try to motivate your contributors through your own participation to the threads.

You have to choose an unsaturated niche, and be very active in it.
Then you will have "word of mouth" action going on there.
Advertising is very important also. :)

The most important thing you should go after is getting active posters.

I've outlined several different parts to starting a forum below:

More will come. I'm also using case studies on forums I've actually launched.

I think this is the wrong section of the forum to promote your service. Try the DP marketplace.

Starting a forum requires something that is ESSENTIAL to any community success online. That is activity.

By providing people with a forum with is currently active with posts and coversations then anyone who finds their way to the forum will be sucked into the community and be inspired to sign up and post.

This means that you need to get your forum sorted before you start driving traffic to it. To do this - you need to make maybe 10 accounts and start posting different topics and different posts, all in an attempt to make the forum look more active and appealing to any aspiring members.

After you've got at least 100 posts from a wide range of accounts, you can then focus on driving traffic to the forum in order to get a higher visitor to member conversion. This can be done by posting on relative forums, on blogs, SEO and good old Adwords.

I've currently got a forum growing at 70 members a day and it started the way I have explained here :)
