Just curious as to what everyone's opinions are on the definition of a conversation. I don't want Wikipedia or Dictionary.com answers. I want your answers. Do you think a conversation is only verbally expressed words to someone else or is a thread with replies and some banter on IM a conversation?
My definition : a mutually understood communication between two parties. Doesn't matter if it's spoken, written, or just a combination of facial expressions.
it need not be mutually understood, can be just discussing an issue which is communicated to one or a set of people.
If 2 people are speaking different languages and do not understand each other - how can it be a conversation? If they start using their eyebrows and smiles (regardless of the language they're speaking) ... THEN it becomes a conversation.
Because they're speaking to each other. They may not be able to understand each other but words are being spoken and heard from both parties.
But they're not conversing. They're just talking "at" each other. If I'm talking to someone who isn't listening, can't hear me, or can't understand me - then I'm talking to myself. For me, a conversation requires understanding and acknowledgment from the other person. Even it it's hand signals, or silly facial expressions - UNDERSTANDING is what makes a conversation in my book.
That's still not a conversation. Conversations involve communication... communication implies that some degree of understanding is involved, even if they don't see eye to eye or agree, or if confusion exists, there is still the possibility of ideas being transferred from one person to the next. By the way, I'm not just talking verbal communication... if you can somehow get your ideas across, with hand gestures or pictures or whatever, then yeah, it counts... but some form of understanding must exist. If it is just gibberish then it isn't really a conversation. Edit: Bah, Kerosene typed faster. -Michael
It's the same as if I were yelling n English across a room who couldn't exactly make out what I was saying. That'd still be considered a conversation. I'm communicating with that person, we're talking. If I'm communicating with words to someone, we're having a conversation.
You're simply yelling at someone. If they don't understand you, then it's not communication. If you're angry, and the other person picks this up (how could they miss it!) - THEN it's a conversation! But an awfully primitive one
Converse is part of conversation. So you can assume that conversation is simply any form of social interaction between at least two parties.
My definition of conversation is speech..It doesn't matter if you understand or not, your conversing..if two people start talking to each other and we don't understand ..they are HAVING A CONVERSATION. You don't have to understand another person to have a conversation.
Ok, see? If this guy were making any sense whatsoever he would be participating in this conversation. Wth do you mean? You have no logic on your statement. At all. It's similar to saying: Auto is part of automobile, so you can assume anything that runs on gas is a car. Wtf? -Michael
I couldn't disagree more. ç§ã¯ç§ã«ã¡ã‚‡ã†ã©ã¬ã‚ŒãŸãŒè‡ªåˆ†è‡ªèº«ã‚ã‚‹ã€å¾“ã£ã¦ç§ãŒã“ã“ã‹ã‚‰å‡ºã‚‹ã¹ãã§ã‚ã‚‹ã“ã¨ã‚’考ãˆã‚‹ã€‚
a conversion is a exchange between one are more people in which you gather information or exchange information on biological or social means.... you can have a conversion with your self and you can understand people of different languages simply by body lingo. on the other hand gossip is two people talking about a person that is not there. so in my eyes you dont need to understand the person fully in order to agree on what he/she wants done which i would class the true means of conversation. while on the other had you need to speak the same language to have a gossip. if conversation where only spoken how would the deaf communicate?
Ummm... one are more people? Exchange on a BIOLOGICAL means??? WTF? LOL! You can have a conversion with yourself? What, biologically? I really wish I spoke whatever your native language is, so I could give you some good analogies of what you just actually said. -Michael
Understanding the words would be necessary, but understanding the concepts is not. I could explain quantum physics to a young child, and they would not understand what I was saying, but we would still be having a conversation. No, that's foreplay...
